Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Binghamton Mets (2-0) at Akron Aeros (0-2) (Double-A Affiliate of the Cleveland Indians)

RHP Logan Verrett (0-0, ---) vs. LHP Matt Packer (0-0, ---)

LAST GAME: The B-Mets improved to 2-0 in 2013 with a second consecutive 2-1 victory over Akron. The Aeros scored first in the second inning after a dropped third strike allowed Roberto Perez to score from third. After being kept in check by Aeros starter T.J. House for five innings, Binghamton tied the game in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Daniel Muno . In the seventh, the B-Mets pushed across the eventual game-winning run without the aid of a hit. With the bases loaded on two walks and a hit batsman, Wilfredo Tovar lifted a weak popup behind first base. Jose Ramirez raced over from second, but dropped it, allowing Cory Vaughn to score the go-ahead run. Mark Cohoon got the win in relief, and Jack Leathersich earned the save in his Double-A debut.

BINGHAMTON STARTING PITCHER: RHP Logan Verrett will be making his Double-A dubut. In his first professional season in 2012, he went 3-2 in Savannah before being called up to St. Lucie in late July. He won his only two decisions in the Florida State League, and posted a 2.09 ERA in 38.2 innings pitched. Verrett went at least 6.0 innings in each start for St Lucie, and never gave up more than two earned runs. Between Savannah and St. Lucie, he combined for 93 strikeouts and only 13 walks. He is ranked the #26 prospect in the Mets organization by Baseball America prior to the 2013 season. Logan was drafted in the third round of the 2011 draft out of Baylor University

AKRON STARTING PITCHER: LHP Matt Packer will make his fourth career start for the Aeros. In 2012, Matt pitched for four different teams in the Cleveland Indian's organization, including a brief stint with the Aeros (7/19-7/29). He also spent time with the AZL Indians, Carolina Mudcats, and Columbus Clippers. Combined, Packer went 4-5 in 2012, going 2-1 in his three starts with Akron. During his time with the Aeros, he struck out 12 hitters and only walked one. In his Minor League career, the Germantown, TN native has posted a 22-24 record with a 3.35 ERA. He was drafted by Cleveland in the 32nd round of the 2009 draft out of the University of Virginia.

A PERFECT START: The B-Mets 2-0 record is their best start since 2002. In that season they finished 73-68 under manager Howie Freiling, but missed out on the post-season. Binghamton has not made the playoffs since 2004, when they lost in the first round to New Hampshire.

WHIFFING BATS: Through the first two games of 2013, B-Met pitchers have struck out 21 Akron Aeros. Rafael Montero struck out eight, Cory Mazzoni struck out seven, and the bullpen has combined for six strikeouts in 7.1 innings pitched. So far, Binghamton ranks third in the Eastern League in that category.

PENA REPRESENTS DR: Last month, catcher Francisco Pena represented his home country, the Dominican Republic, in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. In the tournament, Pena played in two games and went 1-for-2 with an RBI. The Dominican Republic went undefeated (8-0) and won their first ever WBC Championship title. Robinson Cano was named the Most Valuable Player of the Classic.

RISP STRUGGLES: Although the B-Mets have been victorious through the first two nights of the season, they have missed out on several scoring opportunities. As a team, they are batting just .063 (1-16) with RISP. The B-Mets went 1-9 with RISP on Opening Day and were 0-7 in last night's win.

RISE AND SHINE: Today marks the first game with the lights off in 2013. Last season, Binghamton went 18-13 in day games and 50-81 in night games. In 2013 the B-Mets are scheduled for 28 day games.

NEXT GAME PREVIEW: Binghamton faces Akron 12 more times this season, six of which come at Canal Park. The B-Mets wrap up this four-game series against the Aeros tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 PM. RHP Tyler Pill (0-0, - -) will start for the B-Mets against RHP Paulo Espino (0-0, - -).
