Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

Binghamton, NY - The B-Mets (29-42) forced Squirrels starting pitcher Kyle Crick to exit in the first inning and managed to hold on for a 7-6 win in the series opener over Richmond (27-46) on Friday night at NYSEG stadium. Richmond plated three runs in the first inning but the B-Mets countered with four in the bottom of theinning to push Crick from the Game. Tyler Horan led the Richmond offense with a pair of hits, including his fifth home run of the season. The win snapped Binghamton's six game losing streak and handed Richmond their third consecutive loss. The Squirrels continue the six-game road trip Saturday against the Binghamton Mets at NYSEG Stadium at 7:05 PM. Richmond returns to The Diamond on Monday, June 27th with Bark in the Park. The full promotional schedule can be found here.

Richmond jumped on knuckleballer Mickey Jannis in the first inning for an early, butbrief 3-0 lead. Ali Castillo started the game with an infield base hit and took second on a throwing error. Christian Arroyo then worked a walk and Ryder Jones picked up an RBI with a grounder to first base. Left-handed hitters Tyler Horan and Ricky Oropesa followed with RBI singles for a 3-0 lead. Jannis tossed 37 pitches in the first inning but managed to still pitch deep into the game.

The B-Mets countered with a four-run bottom of the first in an inning that took a combined 37 minutes to play. Derrick Gibson led off with a base hit against Squirrels starting pitcher Kyle Crick. Gibson was replaced on the bases due to a fielder's choice on a ball the Squirrels almost turned into a double play. First baseman Dominic Smith then put together a solid at bat to eventually work a walk and send Crick into a tailspin. With Smith and Rosario aboard, JayceBoyd worked a walk to load the bases. Xorge Carrillo also walked to bring in a run and Stefan Sabol cleared the bases with a double to give the B-Mets a 4-3 lead. The double pushed Crick from the game after 36 pitches. Crick (1-6) lasted just two outs and was removed for RHP Jose Casilla in the first inning. The Texan suffered the loss and allowed four runs on tow hits with three walks in the outing.

Mickey Jannis soldiered on and kept the Squirrels off the scoreboard for the rest of his outing. Jannis hurled six innings and allowed just the three run on four hits to earn the win. It was his first win since April 14th, hisfirst start of the year.

The early exit for Crick forced the Squirrels to unload the bullpen. Jose Casilla was the first arm used and allowed one run over 2 1/3 innings of relief. Casilla allowed a solo homer to Dominic Smith in the third to send the B-Mets ahead 5-3.

Preston Claiborne followed Casilla and allowed a run over two innings and Tyler Rogers hurled a pair of scoreless frames by retiring all six batters he faced. Thebullpen allowed Richmond to hang around in the contest and make things interesting in the final two innings. Trailing 6-3 in the eighth, Tyler Horan homered start the inning and cut the deficit to two runs. Myles Schroder then reached an error and scored via a double by Jeff Arnold to pull Richmond to within a run, 6-5.

Ray Black entered to pitch the bottom of the ninth and walked the first two hitters to start his outing. Black then struck out the next two batters but a wild pitch scored an insurance run for Binghamton for a 7-5 advantage. That insurance was needed as Richmond scored a run off closer Beck Wheeler in the ninth but left the tying run at second base to end the game. Wheeler recorded the final five outs to earn his fifth save of the year.
