Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
ALTOONA, PA - The Binghamton Mets plated two runs in a bizarre fifth inning only to surrender four runs in the bottom of the frame in a 9-4 loss to the Altoona Curve on Wednesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Dominic Smith and Phillip Evans each registered multiple-hit games in the losing effort.
With the B-Mets down by a run, LJ Mazzilli started the strange half-inning by reaching on catcher's interference. Champ Stuart followed with a single and stole second as Tyler Eppler uncorked a wild pitch. The errant throw invited Mazzilli to scamper home. Stuart moved to third on a balk and came home with the go-ahead run on a throwing error by Curve second baseman Erich Weiss. Evans was picked off at first to end the inning.
Trailing for the second time in the game, Altoona jumped on Mickey Jannis to grab the lead for good. With the bases full, Erich Weiss punched a two-run single into left-center. Barrett Barnes dumped a run-producing single into center and Edwin Espinal capped the four-run inning by pulling an RBI double down the left-field line.
Smith gave the B-Mets their initial lead with a two-out RBI single in the first inning. Phillip Evans added to the advantage with a solo homer in the third, his eighth long ball of the season.
Jannis's shaky finish spoiled a smooth start. The knuckleballer retired the first 11 hitters he faced before walking Barrett Barnes in the fourth. Two batters later, Stetson Allie blasted a three-run homer to left.
Jannis (3-11) allowed seven runs on seven hits over six innings. Eppler (9-10) was touched for four runs (two earned) on six hits over seven innings.
The B-Mets (62-73) conclude their season series against Altoona on Thursday at 6:00 PM. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 5:45 PM on News Radio 1290, WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
