MADISON, WI - Defenseman Nick Austin scored 17-seconds into overtime to lift the Madison Capitols over the Dubuque Fighting Saints, 5-4, at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Saturday night.

Madison (8-7-1-0) is ranked seventh in the Eastern Conference with 17 points. Dubuque (9-6-1-1) sits in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 20 points.

"Overall, it wasn't our best game," said Captiols' General Manager and Head Coach Garrett Suter. "It wasn't the prettiest game, but the guys battled when it mattered, and found a way to win even though this might have been a game when we should not have won. It was good, and it will be good for them to learn from it."

For the game-winning goal, Austin passed the puck from the right point back to forward Alec Broetzman who was trailing the defenseman along the right wing boards. Austin positioned himself between the center point and the left face-off circle for a return pass by Broetzman for a one-timer that beat goaltender Jaxon Castor on his blocker side. Austin's second goal of the season, the game-winner, was scored just17-seconds into the overtime period, and assisted by forward Mick Messner.

Opening up the scoring for the Fighting Saints, forward Austin Rueschhoff chipped the puck from behind the net to defenseman Michael Boyle at the point. Boyle one-timed the puck from the red line past the glove of Capitols netminder Dryden McKay at 6:36 of the first period for the early 1-0 lead.

The Capitols answered back to tie the game, 1-1, at 9:47 of the opening frame. Picking up a bouncing puck off the boards, forward Vincent de Mey wristed a shot past Castor for his first goal of the season. The goal was unassisted.

Madison took their first lead of the night, 2-1, at 14:44 of the first stanza. Skating through the neutral zone, forward Kevin O'Neil picked up the loose puck at Dubuque's blue line. O'Neil deked around a defenseman and chipped the puck over the right pad of Castor for his second goal of the season.

To even the score, Boyle received the puck in the neutral zone and crossed the Capitols blueline before wristing a shot which was blocked by a Madison player. Defenseman Taylor Brierley skated to the loose puck inside the right point and one-timed it through the legs of McKay at 17:18 in the first stanza.

Putting Dubuque back on top at 19:37 of the opening period, forward Zach Solow netted his sixth goal of the season. Solow received a pass from forward Colin Theisen in the neutral zone and carried it into the Capitols zone. Solow buried the puck in the top right corner of the goal to give the Fighting Saints a 3-2.

Skating on the power play, forward Easton Brodzinski pocketed his team-leading 10th goal of the season at 13:49 of the second frame. O'Neil was between the hash marks and sent a short pass to forward Eugene Fadyeyev in the right face-off circle. Fadyeyev quickly found Brodzinski skating in from the left circle for the one-timer past Castor to tie the game at 3-3.

To give the Capitols a 4-3 lead at 14:42 on the middle period, de Mey scored his second goal of the night. Defensemen Philip Nyberg took a shot from the right point that hit the skate of a Dubuque player. De Mey gained control of the rebound between the hash marks, side stepped a Fighting Saints player, and backhanded the puck up and over the pad of Castor for the go-ahead goal.

Dubuque tied the game at 4-4 with defenseman Patrick Kudla's third goal of the season at 15:50 of the final frame. From behind the Capitols net, forward Alexander Steeves passed the puck through traffic to Kudla at the center point. Kudla side-stepped a sliding Capitols defenseman and wristed a shot that snuck through the legs of McKay.

McKay (6-2-0-0) earned his sixth win of the season stopping 36-of 40-shots.

Castor (8-6-1-1) took his sixth loss of the season making 17 saves on 22 shots.
