Owen Sound Attack News Release

The Owen Sound Attack kicked off a two-game weekend road trip with a big win over the Eastern Conference leading Kingston Fronteancs on Saturday, Jan. 29.

Powered by a three point performances by both Jonah Gadjovich and Bryson Cianfrone, the Attack were able to battle to a 5-2 victory over the Fronts at the K-Rock Centre, avenging an earlier 2-1 defeat at the hands of Kingston earlier in the season.

The only two goals Attack goalkeeper Michael McNiven allowed on the evening were powerplay tallies, and the Montreal Canadiens prospect was lights out in the 3rd period, stopping all 24 shots he faced in the frame.

Owen Sound opened up the scoring early, taking advantage of a strong second effort by Gadjovich to score just 57 seconds into the contest.

Corraling a clearing attempt by the Fronts with just one hand, defenceman Jacob Friend picked up the primary assist on Gadjovich's 8th goal of the year by firing a shot in on Kingston goalie Lucas Peressini. Friend's shot would bounce off of Bryson Cianfrone before Gadjovich was able to out muscle his coverage and whack the loose puck into the back of the net.

The home team eventually responded though, taking advantage of a slashing penalty to Matthew Struthers at the 6:40 mark of the opening frame. Spencer Watson would get the Kingston goal, scoring his 100th career OHL goal to even the game at 1-1 in the early going.

Kingston would use another powerplay to double their lead, this time making it 2-1 on a slapper from the point by Stephen DesRocher at 14:09 of the first.

But Owen Sound wouldn't hesitate when it came to responding, scoring exactly one minute later.

Another stellar defensive play by the Attack - this time by Damir Sharipzyanov in the neutral zone - allowed a streaking Nick Suzuki to find a wide open Gadjovich in front of the net.

Gadjovich would make no mistake in picking up his 2nd goal of the evening, tying the game at two with 4:51 to play in the opening frame. The goal would mark the sophomore forward's first career multi-point game and take the squads to the first intermission tied.

After giving up their early 1-0 lead, Owen Sound would retake it midway through the 2nd period thanks to a goal from Jacob Busch.

Busch would break straight for the slot after coming off of the Attack bench and Bryson Cianfrone made a heads up play to find the wide open power forward who rung a snapper off of the post and in behind Peressini. Jonah Gadjovich would also assist on the play, which put the Attack up 3-2 at 11:09 of the middle stanza.

The Attack were able to take that 3-2 lead into the 3rd period thanks in large part to a numer of big saves by goalkeeper Michael McNiven, including a stellar stop on a Cody Caron breakaway just after Busch restored the Owen Sound lead.

Kingston threw everything they had at the Attack in the 3rd period, but a pair of early Paul Davis Systems Penalty Kills by the Attack gave them the momentum they needed to hold off the charge.

Michael McNiven lead the Attack penalty killers in the final frame, turning aside all 24 shots he faced in the 3rd period, allowing Owen Sound to pocket a pair of empty net goals late in the game.

Those empty net tallies came from Damir Sharipzyanov, who scored his 4th of the year with 1:42 left in the game before Bryson Cianfrone picked up his 3rd point of the evening by scoring into the open cage with under 10 seconds left to ice the game. Both of the goals were unassisted, with Sharipzyanov scoring from centre-ice while Cianfrone scored from inside the Attack zone.

Owen Sound swept the Mac Taylor Corporation 3 Stars, with Jonah Gadjovich, Michael McNiven, and Bryson Cianfrone earning 1st, 2nd, and 3rd stars respectively.

The Mark McDade Remax Shots on Goal finished at 42-33 for the Frontenacs.

Owen Sound hits the ice again on Saturday, Jan. 30 when they take on the 67's in Ottawa at 1:00pm.

Fans can catch that game live on Rogers Local 53 or by tuning into Kia of Owen Sound Terry's Trailer Service Bear Radio on 560 CFOS.
