Attack Fall to Knights in London

February 5, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release

The Owen Sound Attack met the London Knights for the last time in the 2015-16 OHL season on Friday, Feb. 5, and it would be a night that the Attack would like to forget.

Failing to score on five powerplay opportunities, the Attack were on the wrong side of a 5-0 game that saw a pair of Knights post four point evenings.

London's win was backstopped by a 26 save shutout on the part of goalie Brendan Burke, but the overage goalie was matched by a stellar performance by Attack tendy Michael McNiven, despite giving up all five of Owen Sound's goals against.

The Knights would get the game's first goal, but it came much later than the home side thought it would.

Owen Sound weathered an early flurry of London scoring chances thanks in large part to some big time saves by Michael McNiven, but the pressure would prove too much with 3:08 left in the opening 20 minutes of play.

London would open up their 1-0 lead on a goal by Christian Dvorak, who made good on a pass from Mitchell Marner on a two-on-one play that McNiven had no chance on.Dvorak's goal would send the Knights to the intermission with a goal lead, but the Attack sustained some solid pressure late in the period that gave them life to begin the 2nd.That life wouldn't translate though, as Dvoark scored again to double the London lead, this time rifling a snapshot off of the crossbar and in behind McNiven with 4:28 gone in the middle stanza. The rest of the 2nd period would be a story of special teams, and the plot didn't favour the Attack.Owen Sound's 16th ranked powerplay unit failed to capitalize on eight minutes worth of Baywest Nissan Powerplay time, including a double minor for high sticking to Max Jones. That futility would haunt the Bears, who saw London's two goal lead turn into a three goal margin on a Knights' man advantage.Just 12 seconds into an interference minor to Jacob Friend, London's Matthew Tkachuk took a feed in the slot and one-timed it home to put the Knights up by a field goal with 2:10 left in the 2nd. That goal would wrap up the scoring in frame and send the Attack to the intermission looking to mount a big third period comeback.A comeback from three goals down would be daunting enough, but after both teams failed to score in the first 10 minutes of the 3rd period, London's three-spot would turn into a 4 goal lead thanks to a tally from Aaron Berisha. After a highlight reel save by McNiven, Berisha was able to corrall the rebound and bank it in off of the sprawling netminder to make it 4-0 with 9:58 left in the game.Just moments later the Knights increased that lead to five goals off of the stick of Mitchell Marner. London's 5th goal of the evening came with 7:02 left in regulation and marked four points on the evening for both Marner and Dvorak.London's 5th goal would be the final tally of the game, as the Knights walked away to a 5-0 victory to wrap up the season series between the teams. The Knights swept the Mac Taylor Corporation 3 Stars of the game with Dvorak, Marner, and Burke being named 1st, 2nd, and 3rd stars respectively. The Mark McDade Remax Shots on Goal finished at 29-26 in favour the Knights.
