Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, OH - Thursday's second day of action in the 2007 Atlantic 10 Tournament at Fifth Third Field in Dayton, Ohio, features three games and showcases the top two seeded teams in the tournament. The top seeded University of North Carolina Charlotte 49ers take on the fifth seeded Rhode Island Rams at 12:00 PM, while the second seeded Fordham University Rams take on the third seeded Richmond Spiders beginning at 3:30 PM. The third game of the day starts at 7:00 PM and features the Xavier Musketeers versus a yet to be determined one loss team in the double elimination event.

Day one of the tournament featured an upset, based on seedings, in the opening game. Fifth seeded Rhode Island used a four run first inning to jump in front of fourth seeded Xavier and then survived a late inning rally by the Musketeers to move on with a 4-3 win. The Rams reward is a date with the top seeded 49ers and Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year Adam Mills.

In the 3:30 PM game, the third seeded Richmond Spiders flex their muscles in down the sixth seeded St. Bonaventure Bonnies 8-2 to post an opening game. Alex Hale pitched seven strong innings and Joe Mahoney supplied the offense for the Spiders with a grand slam as Richmond advanced in the winner's bracket.

In the nightcap of day one, the Musketeers fell behind to St. Bonaventure 6-1 through the first four innings in the first elimination game of the event before rallying late for a 15-11 win. With the loss, St. Bonaventure became the first team sent packing with two losses. Xavier used a seven run seventh inning, highlighted by Andy Zellers three RBI double and a six run eighth inning, featuring a two run single by Adam Lipski, to blow the game wide open. The Bonnies battled back to make the Muskie's sweat it out with three in the eighth and two more in the ninth, to close to within four. In the end, St. Bonaventure was its own worst enemy committing five errors, leading to ten unearned runs.
