Asheville Altitude News Release

ASHEVILLE, N.C., February 7, 2005 - AshevilleÂ’s Ron Slay promised a victory to the Altitude fans during his welcoming remarks against the Florida Flame Monday night at the Asheville Civic Center. After posting 30 points and three rebounds his promise proved to be a guarantee as the Altitude defeated the Flame 121-97 and snapped a three-game losing streak.

Slay has been huge since joining the starting line-up netting a season-high 38 points in his previous game.

“I came in here feeding off the last game,” said Slay, who added three rebounds. “The shots that weren’t falling for me earlier in the year are finally starting to fall. I put a lot of work in at practice over the last few weeks to try to develop my shot.”

Asheville dominated the contest from the very start.

Slay proved to have the hot hand early in the contest shooting perfecting from the field (3-of-3) and free-throw line (4-of-4) in the first quarter scoring from all areas on the court. The former University of Tennessee standout tallied 20 first-half points, connecting on 8-of-10 baskets.

“It makes a huge difference when you take easy shots,” Slay added.

Asheville shot a blistering 62 percent from the field connecting on 49-79 baskets, posting a season-high with 121.

Florida, who also shot well from the field, registered 53.5 percent (38-71) from the floor but gave up 41 points to the Altitude on 25 turnovers.

“We shot the ball well tonight,” said Altitude head coach Joey Meyer. “We executed and played unselfish basketball. And that’s the way I like our guys to play. Pass the ball until we find the open shooter.”

Five Altitude players scored in double digits including Slay, Kirk Penney (24), Lenny Stokes (19), Tony Kitchings (16) and Joseph Forte (10). Stokes added a game-high eight assists to go with his 19 points. Kitchings was almost perfect from the field connecting on 8-of-9 from the field.

Carl English led the Flame with 24 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Darius Rice added with 21 points and Byron Mouton followed closely with 14. Kirk Haston chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Asheville returns to action tomorrow when they host the Huntsville Flight beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Civic Center. Florida continues on their road trip facing the Roanoke Dazzle, Wednesday Feb. 9 at the Roanoke Civic Center.
