Around the Horn: Wahoos Salvage Series, Escape with 5-3 Victory
July 3, 2013 - Southern League (SL1)
Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release
The Blue Wahoos stole the show before a packed house in the series finale, defeating Jacksonville 5-3. Though the Suns threatened down the stretch, the bullpen protected Josh Smith's lead to clinch the victory and added a late home run to shut the door. Here are the highlights from tonight's win in Around the Horn:
SOUVENIR CITY: Marquez Smith put Pensacola ahead for good with a solo home run in the fourth inning, his third of the week and first on the road. The June acquisition has made his hits count; of his twelve Blue Wahoos knocks, eight have gone for extra bases. Ryan LaMarre's no-doubt blast in the ninth inning put the match just out of reach and gave closer Loek Van Mil an insurance run before the save.
CYCLE THROUGH: The lineup continued a recent trend and sparked another early-inning rally against a Suns starter. The Wahoos recorded all but a run and a hit against Jay Jackson across the third, fourth, and fifth frames. With the exception of Smith's shot, Pensacola played small ball to bring runners home, plating a pair of runners on singles.
DIAL Q FOR QUALITY: Josh Smith notched his eighth quality start of the season while earning his team-leading seventh win. Defined as an outing of six innings or more while yielding three earned runs or fewer, Smith has the third-highest stash of quality starts on the rotation and trails Daniel Renken (ten) and Ryan Dennick (nine).
STREAK ENDS AT NINE: Donald Lutz was hitless in tonight's affair, thus ending his hitting streak at nine games. From April 24 to July 2, the outfielder was 11-for-32 (.344) with five runs and four RBI. The mark ties a team high set by several players and ranks fifth in team history.
The Wahoos (8-7) are back at home tomorrow with the first pitch against the Jackson Generals scheduled for a special July 4 start time of 4:00 PM. After a showing of the movie Hook, fans can watch the Sertoma Club fireworks from their seats at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium. Tune in to ESPN Radio (1450 AM and 101.1 FM) for "Countdown to First Pitch" at 3:00 PM or watch the live video feed available to online subscribers on MiLB.TV.
