Around the Horn: Wahoos Bash Barons 6-2
August 23, 2013 - Southern League (SL1)
Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release
An opportunistic Blue Wahoos offense capitalized on three errors as they roundly defeated the Birmingham Barons 6-2 on Friday night. The bottom of the order contributed six hits and four runs batted in as Pensacola crossed the plate early and often, taking the lead on Ryan LaMarre's two-run single in the second inning. Former Wahoos outfielder Cody Puckett countered with two runs in the next frame before the home team plated four unanswered runs. Here are the highlights as we go Around the Horn:
FOR THE FANS: A sellout crowd packed Pensacola Bayfront Stadium on Fan Appreciation Friday, the twenty-seventh full house of the season. The lively audience recognized College Night as well as a wide array of events ranging from a mystery giveaway to a marriage proposal. The Wahoos capped their final Friday home game with the final installment of the Pack Your Bags contest, sending a family out of town courtesy of Silver Airways. BOMBS AWAY: After shelling fifty-two hits in five games at Birmingham earlier this month, Pensacola picked up where they left off with eleven knocks against a battered Barons staff. The squad strung together three straight hits in the sixth inning, taking advantage of miscues for a pair of runs. The Wahoos are 19-11 when they record ten hits or more.
LET THE BARON BEWARE: Ryan LaMarre extended his season-best hitting streak to seven games with a two-hit night. The center fielder holds a 9-for-28 line over that span, including five RBI. Ray Chang collected three hits and drove in two runs while Travis Mattair bumped his average to .247 with a pair of singles.
HUNT FOR SEPTEMBER: The Wahoos held their ground with a victory tonight but saw their elimination number dip to six with Jacksonville's road win. Pensacola currently sits in fourth place, four games behind the division leader. Mississippi and Mobile, the respective second- and third-place teams in the South Division, also won their series openers.
The Wahoos (31-29) will summon Daniel Renken (6-8, 3.62 ERA) to start tomorrow's game with the first pitch set for 6:30 PM. In addition to postgame fireworks, fans will have the opportunity to bid on special edition navy camouflage jerseys. All proceeds will support the Eagle Fund, a wing of the Andrews Institute Foundation that provides wounded warriors access to the highest quality of care possible.
