Argonauts go deep with receivers

March 16, 2004 - Canadian Football League (CFL) - Toronto Argonauts News Release

Toronto – The Toronto Argonauts’ training camp should be quite competitive this May as the club announces the signing of four new receivers. Robert Baker, Deveren Johnson, Pierre Brown and Robert Johnson will come to Toronto ready to play.

Robert Baker, 5-11, 208, spent three seasons with the Miami Dolphins. A two-year letterman at Auburn, Baker spent his 1999 rookie season on MiamiÂ’s injured reserve list. In 2001, Baker was on the Dolphin practice squad for the regular season before being brought to the active roster for their playoff game. In 2002, Baker played in 10 games for Miami, recording one 17-yard reception, returning seven punts for 55 yards and adding five special teams tackles. Most recently in 2003, Baker was allocated by the Dolphins to the NFL Europe World Bowl champion Frankfurt Galaxy, where he finished among league leaders and was an All-NFLEL selection, catching 35 passes for 671 yards and seven touchdowns and returning 26 punts for a 13.9 average, including one touchdown.

A receiver with size, Deveren Johnson was the first draft prospect in Sacred Heart University and Northeast Conference history. At 6”4, Johnson originally began his career on the basketball court at Champlain (Vt.) Junior College and had intended on playing for the Pioneers' hoops squad upon arrival at the school in 2000. Instead, he suited up for gridiron action, catching 88 passes for a school career-record 1,750 yards (19.9 avg) and set another Pioneers all-time mark with 19 touchdowns in only 22 games. In 2001, Johnson was MVP of NEC League, first team All-American and first team All-Conference. He led his team in receiving and yardage and was named Receiver of the Year. In 2002, Johnson was drafted in the 6th round by the Dallas Cowboys where he was part of the Cowboys’ practice squad and the AFL’s Dallas Desperados. Most recently, Johnson joined the New England Patriots for a brief stint in August 2003.

Pierre Brown was allocated to NFLELÂ’s Berlin Thunder by the Detroit Lions in January 2003 where he made 22 catches for 286 yards and 1 touchdown. Signed by the Lions as an undrafted rookie free agent on April 26, 2002, Brown played in 1 pre-season game and spent the fall of 2002 on their practice squad. In college, Brown had a four year career at Wayne State University with 163 catches for 3,138 yards (19.3 average) and 37 touchdowns. He was named team Offensive MVP in his senior year. The Engineering major played in the Division II All-Star Cactus Bowl where he caught 4 passes for 42 yards. As a junior, Brown broke the 1000-yard receiving plateau for the first time in school history with 1,492 yards.

Detroit native Robert Johnson played for Western Illinois University in 2001 where he made 29 catches for 373 yards and 4 touchdowns. In 2002, Johnson joined Calgary Stampeders where he made 33 catches for, 595 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Stampeders nominated Johnson as the CFLÂ’s Most Outstanding Rookie for 2002. In 2002, Johnson also spent time with the Carolina Panthers before attending training camp with the Green Bay Packers in 2003.

The Toronto Argonauts are North America's oldest professional football club, having celebrated their 130th anniversary in 2003. The Toronto Argonauts have 14 Grey Cup championships to their credit.
