Toronto Argonauts News Release

Toronto, ON – Former Defensive Lineman Mike Wadsworth will be remembered fondly as the one of the greatest players to ever dress for the Toronto Argonauts Football Club. Wadsworth played for Toronto from 1966 to 1970, and competed in 70 regular season games and eight playoff games.

Peter Martin, President of the Argonauts’ Alumni Association, as well as a former teammate and friend of Wadsworth, offered his condolences to the friends and family of Mike Wadsworth on behalf of the Association and the Toronto Argonauts. “We are all deeply saddened by the sudden loss of such an outstanding player and friend. He will be missed.” Martin applauded Wadsworth for his ability to, “commit so much to his family, his academics (as a law school student) and his professional football career. Mike gave everything he had and earned the respect of everyone around him.”

A graduate of Notre Dame in the 1960s out of Toronto's downtown De La Salle High School, Wadsworth came to the Argos in 1966, where he was named East Division Rookie of the Year. Wadsworth was later named to the CFL all-star team in 1968 and was a member of some great Argo teams, but they never made it to the Grey Cup game.

Following his days in Toronto Wadsworth became the Athletic Director at his alma mater Notre Dame University in South Bend Indiana. Wadsworth also served as a colour analyst on CTVÂ’s coverage of CFL football.

Wadsworth is survived by his wife Bernadette and three daughters. A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday at St. Michael's Cathedral in Toronto.

The Toronto Argonauts are North America's oldest professional football club, having celebrated their 130th anniversary in 2003. The Toronto Argonauts have 14 Grey Cup championships to their credit.
