Daytona Tortugas News Release

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Florida State League office named Aristides Aquino the Florida State League Player of the Year for 2016 on Thursday afternoon. Aquino becomes just the second player from Daytona to win the award.

Aquino, nicknamed "The Punisher", is currently batting .275 with 22 home runs and 77 RBI in 122 games played. He leads the league in slugging percentage (.521), extra-base hits (60), triples (12) and total bases (246). Additionally, he also leads all of active players with his 22 home runs, is third in RBIs, fourth in at-bats (472), fifth in hits (130) and fourth in runs scored (67).

Maybe most impressive is Aquino's 28 outfield assists, the most in all of baseball. It's the highest total in the MiLB since atleast 2005, which is as far back as the records go. His 28 outfield assists are just two shy of an FSL record, 30, which was last done in 1953. To put it in perspective, no one in the MLB has registered 28 outfield assists since 1944.

Aquino has set career highs this year in games played, at-bats, runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, RBIs, walks and total bases.

He becomes the second Daytona player to win the award and the first since 2004, when Brandon Sing won the first ever FSL Player of the Year award. Sing, playing for the Daytona Cubs, hit 32 home runs, which fell one shy of the FSL record. Six of the first 12 award winners have played in the MLB.

Aquino was also named to the Postseason FSL All-Star team, along with teammate Jimmy Herget. Herget, a two-time All-Star in 2016, is 4-4 with a 1.82 ERA in 49 appearances. He leads the league with 23 saves in 26 opportunities. He also ranks first in the FSL in total relief appearances, games finished, and is second in strikeouts per nine innings. It's the first two All-Star honors for Herget in his career. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
