Another Walk-Off from Lewis in Another 3-2 Win
May 13, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI - Chad Lewis whacked a walk-off RBI single into right-center field in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Beloit Snappers a 3-2 triumph over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in Midwest League action with 449 in attendance at Pohlman Field.
The Snappers now stand at 20-15 this season after taking two out of three in this series. The Kernels leave with a record of 24-11.
The ninth inning began with reliever Tim Atherton (2-2) in his second inning of work. Bruce Maxwell walked to lead-off and, following a strikeout, Matt Olson and Rashun Dixon also took bases on balls to load the bags. After another strikeout, Lewis strode to the plate and grounded a ball back up the middle that hit off the second base bag and bounded into short right-center while the winning run came in. Vince Voiro (2-1) earned his second win this season after allowing just one unearned run on two hits in four innings. Voiro also struck out five without walking a batter.
Cedar Rapids broke on top in the first when Byron Buxton singled and Niko Goodrum (2-4, RBI) doubled for a 1-0 lead.
That lead was entrusted to Matt Tomshaw and, for six innings, he held it while allowing only two hits and one walk. In the seventh, Beloit figured out Tomshaw and grabbed the lead when Bruce Maxwell singled and Renato Nunez (2-4, HR, 2 RBI, run) launched his ninth homer of the season over the left field wall.
Despite Nunez's heroics, the Kernels were unfazed and fought back to tie it up. Byron Buxton reached on an error with one out and promptly stole second. One out later, Jorge Polanco dunked a single into short center field to tally the tying run. That was all Cedar Rapids could muster, however, and, an inning later, they watched the game slip away.
The Snappers will take the momentum from this win to Clinton for four games with the LumberKings. A doubleheader kicks-off the series on Tuesday, with a first pitch time of 5:00pm. The first game will feature RHP Austin House (0-2, 3.72 ERA) against LHP Rusty Shellhorn (0-0, 3.00 ERA). Starters for the second game are TBD.
