January 7, 2009 - Frontier League (FL) - Southern Illinois Miners
MARION, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners have sold the playing contract of all-star first baseman Tim Dorn to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Dorn will be invited to the Angels 2009 spring training in Tempe, Ariz.
Dorn holds the Miners career record for home runs (35), RBI (118) and runs scored (100). He is a .313 hitter in 125 games with Southern Illinois over the last two seasons. The six-foot-eight-inch slugger began the 2007 season with the Miners but signed with the St. Louis Cardinals after just 32 games. He battled through a wrist injury with the Cardinals Single-A affiliate in the Quad Cities before re-signing with the Miners prior this past season.
"We are very excited for Tim," Miners Manager Mike Pinto said. "This is a great opportunity for him. All of our guys are here with the hope of getting to an organization and Tim will have a chance to make one of the Angels clubs this year."
The Southern California native began his professional career as a pitcher with the Seattle Mariners organization. This is the eighth time a Miners player has joined a major league organization.
The Miners will begin the 2009 season in Evansville on Friday, May 22. The home opener is scheduled for Friday, May 29 at 7:05 p.m. For the latest news and updates, visit www.southernillinoisminers.com.
