Andino Homers Twice in Zephyrs' 9-5 Win

July 15, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Robert Andino hit two home runs as the New Orleans Zephyrs scored four first-inning runs on Friday night and never looked back, defeating the Fresno Grizzlies, 9-5.

Andino homered to lead off a game for the second time this season, and posted his second multi-home run game, with both previously occurring on June 23 in Omaha. He added a leadoff single in the seventh to spark a three-run rally, highlighted by Destin Hood's two-run single and a run-scoring single from Tomas Telis.

Over the last month, Andino is hitting .328 and ranks among the Pacific Coast League's leaders with 40 hits and 17 extra-base hits.

The Zephyrs sent all nine batters to the plate in the first inning against Tommy Shirley, scoring four times on four hits. Xavier Scruggs followed Andino's leadoff homer with his 13th long ball of the year to move into a tie with Hood for the team lead.

Scruggs has swatted six homers in 12 games in July while batting .348.

Z's starter Jarred Cosart allowed a second-inning homer to Tyler White, but otherwise kept Fresno at bay through the first five innings.

Activated earlier in the day following a six-week stint on the disabled list with an oblique injury, Cosart (3-3) gave up a pair of runs with two outs in the sixth when Max Stassi singled off Jo-Jo Reyes but still picked up his second win in a row.

Fresno clawed within 6-4 in the top of the seventh when Alex Bregman reached on a pop fly double into the right field corner and scored on a single by Preston Tucker.

But the Z's answered with three runs in the bottom half of the frame to provide insurance for Brian Ellington, who surrendered an RBI double to Tucker in the ninth before striking out the side.

The Zephyrs snapped a six-game losing skid to Fresno dating to the 2014 season.

Shirey (7-6) was charged with six runs in five innings and took the loss, his second straight following a four-game win streak.

The Zephyrs and Grizzlies continue the series on Saturday at 6 p.m.
