Anderson Leads Goldeyes in Laredo

Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Kyle Anderson (1-0) was terrific in his regular season debut, holding the defending champions to one earned run on a scattered seven hits over six and one-third innings. Anderson struck out two and did not allow a walk. Anderson was also efficient, recording 19 outs on just 74 pitches.

"The story of the night is Kyle Anderson," said Goldeyes' hitting coach Tom Vaeth . "He gave us exactly what we were needing after our last couple of games. I remember looking up and seeing a few at bats where he was 0-2 right away. This is a really tough place to pitch, and a really good lineup on the other side. Kyle did a great job of avoiding the dangerous part of the ballpark."

Jacob Rogers hit his third home run of the season to give the Goldeyes' an early lead. Rogers connected with two outs in the top of the first on a long flyball to left-centre. Adam Heisler reached first on a one-out walk and stole second base to score on the home run. Four of Rogers' five extra-base hits this season have gone to the opposite field.

"He (Rogers) is just taking what the pitchers are giving him right now," said Vaeth. "He goes out and protects that side of the plate really well, and he can keep the barrel through the zone a long time."

Anderson made the lead stand up into the seventh. After former Major Leaguer Travis Denker led off the inning with a solo home run to left, Abel Nieves singled to center to put the tying run on base. Anderson induced a popout from Alex Nunez before Brandon Shimo relieved Anderson for the final two outs with the lead still intact. With Shimo on the mound, Josh Romanski made a key defensive play, robbing Matt Koch of a hit with a diving catch in shallow right field. Romanski was making his regular season debut after graduating from the University of San Diego over the weekend.

Cameron McVey worked a perfect bottom of the eighth on just eight pitches, and was helped when Wes Darvill made a sliding stop at third base to rob Ty Morrison of a potential leadoff single.

In the top of the ninth, the Goldeyes added four insurance runs, all scoring with two outs. Rogers drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second by David Rohm . After Romanski was struck out, Casio Grider poked a groundball into the hole at shortstop that resulted in an infield single. Grider stole second, which led to a two-run double to right from Darvill. Carlton Tanabe pinch hit for Tanner Murphy, and singled home Darvill on a line drive to right that extended the lead to 5-1. Tanabe took second on the throw to the plate, and scored on Maikol Gonzalez 's double down the left field line.

Rohm has hit safely in each of the first five games of the season.

Jailen Peuguero closed out the game on three consecutive groundouts to Gonzalez at short, using just six pitches in the process.

"First key for tomorrow is to have another good start defensively," said Vaeth. "We'll be seeing their number one starter as well. We'll have to take the walks we can get, and we have to grind out at bats."

Troy Marks (0-1) took the loss for Laredo (2-3), allowing two earned runs on three hits in five and one-third innings. Marks walked five and struck out five.

The series continues Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Mikey O'Brien faces right-hander Ryan Beckman. All the action can be heard locally on 93.7 FM CJNU and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
