An Introduction to FC Edmonton's REX Girls Program

September 20, 2016 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
FC Edmonton News Release

FC Edmonton's girls soccer program is getting a revamp for the upcoming season. The program formerly known as the Regional Performance Centre (RPC) will now fall under Canada Soccer Association Women's EXCEL program. FC Edmonton REX officially gets underway this week with the new program's first on-field training sessions.

REX director Joey Lombardi has worked with REX technical director and North Region coach Sergio Texeira as well as a number of technical staff to put together the various aspects of the Girls REX program. The program includes four training and two gym sessions per-week, as well as 'report cards' to measure each players development. On-field training sessions will take place at Edmonton's Victoria Soccer Centre, while weekly fitness testing will occur at the University of Alberta's Saville Centre. Additionally, players will also compete in weekly exhibition matches throughout the year.

The transition to the EXCEL curriculum puts FC Edmonton in line with other professional club's development model. While the previous RPC model was based within Alberta, FC Edmonton REX program will now mirror girls programs running within organizations such as Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Local soccer talent within Edmonton will receive an increased level of exposure thanks to the nature of being affiliated with a national program. Players are selected for the FC Edmonton REX program through extensive scouting from a number of Alberta-based coaches.

The REX program got underway last week, with players undergoing fitness testing at the U of A. The players will now hit the pitch for regular training sessions beginning September 19.

""We are very excited to actually start our training with the girls," Texeria said. "It has been a long process from the scouting of the players, meeting the CSA Rex staff and getting our staff trained. It was just great to get things going on Monday and actually see this program in action. Our players will greatly benefit from it! This program would not be possible without the continued support of Tom and Dave Fath and the girls and myself are deeply appreciative of their generosity."

FC Edmonton's REX Program aims to prepare and develop players to move onwards to the national and collegiate levels of women's soccer. Funded by FC Edmonton owners Tom and Dave Fath, the women's REX program also draws support from the Alberta Soccer Association. For more information on FC Edmonton, please visit www.fcedmonton.com.
