Amarillo Bulls News Release

AMARILLO, TX - One of the areas of the game that the Amarillo Bulls appeared to be lacking in the 2016-17 season was the ability to be physical and to use size and strength.

The Bulls Coaching Staff took a big step in that direction with the tendering of defenseman Brendan Datema for the 2017-18 season.

Datema, a native of the Detroit, Michigan area, played in 32 games for Belle Tire U18 program and picked up two goals and 12 assists for 24 points and had 50 minutes in penalties. One of the defenseman's most productive games was back in February where he collected two assists, including one via the power play and four penalty minutes in a win over Fox Motors.

"I was approached by Matt Nicholson to tender with the team," said Datema, who is 6-4 and 196 pounds. "I did lots of research on the team and liked the background and everything I saw. It all just went on from there."

Datema and his mom drove 20 hours to Amarillo during Spring Break to practice with the team on the final weekend of the regular season. It was a getting to know you opportunity. The rearguard said he can make a good first pass and has the ability to skate out of situations in the corner by moving the puck out. One of the areas that he is known for the most is the physicality which fans in the Texas Panhandle should like.

"I have always like the hitting aspect of the game," he said. "I remember when I was in Peewee there was a restriction on body checking. I moved up a year so I could keep on playing physical. Ever since then I have loved the hitting and body-checking so it's a big part of my game."

Datema was teammates with Brendan Furry on the Belle Tire U18 this past season. Furry spent the last month of the regular season with the Bulls and had a strong showing including two goals and one assists for three points in seven games.

"Seeing a kid from my team starting to score goals right away in the North American Hockey League is pretty cool," Datema said. "I think playing with him here in Amarillo would be neat."

Defenseman Brendan Datema is the third tender announced by the Amarillo Bulls for the 2017-18 season joining Brendan Furry and Jake Hanthorn.
