Amarillo Bulls Remain Alive in Playoff Fight After Big Win over IceRays

March 17, 2018 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Amarillo Bulls News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - One of the biggest rallies of the season powered the Amarillo Bulls to a third period comeback and kept their playoff aspirations alive.

The Bulls netted four third period goals to erase a 3-2 deficit and go on to beat the Corpus Christi IceRays 6-3. The victory pulled Rocky Russo's charges to within six points of the fourth and final playoff spot in the South Division. The two teams will have one final meeting tomorrow (Saturday) night at American Bank Center.

The Bulls remained unbeaten 4-0-2-0 in their last six Friday games. Jared Domin scored three times for the Bulls, while Nikita Sokolov, Nick Griebenow and Cameron Bartkoski had the others. Sokolov also had two assists. Trevor Micucci posted the win in goal which was his second against the IceRays this season.

It was a great start to the game for the Bulls as they capitalized with two goals less than two minutes apart. Cameron Bartkoski scored on a blast from the point with help from Alex Peterson and Trey Bagwell. Jared Domin then jumped on a IceRays' defenseman miscue and scored on a breakaway to give Amarillo a 2-0 advantage. Each team had 10 shots in the first period.

The second period saw special teams hurt the Amarillo Bulls as the hometown IceRays were able to score three times. The first of two took place shorthanded less than 30 seconds apart as Brendan Miller scored back to back goals, including one on a high shot. Larry Jungwirth gave Corpus Christi the lead late in the middle stanza with a power play goal. The IceRays outshot the Bulls 13-7.

Heading into the final 20 minutes on Friday, the Bulls hadn't won a game when trailing and that all changed. Jared Domin ripped a shot past Chad Veltri to tie the game just 3:36 into the third period. With the game destined for overtime, the combination of Egor Kurbatov and Nikita Sokolov gave the Bulls the lead on a pretty passing play. Nick Griebenow also provided an assist on the play.

In the final 90 seconds of regulation, the IceRays pulled their goaltender looking to get the equalizer but were unsuccessful as the visitors tacked on two empty net goals to round out the scoring. Jared Domin scored into an empty net and then Nick Griebenow picked up his second of the season.

The Corpus Christi IceRays outshot the Amarillo Bulls 33-30. There were a total of eight power plays in the contest with the Bulls going 0 for 6 and the IceRays were 1 for 2.
