Amarillo Bulls News Release

AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Bulls have begun to build towards their future and have tendered their first player that fans got a glimpse of during the recent holiday season.

Brendan Walkom, a native of Moon Township, PA, has signed a tender to play with the Bulls for the 2016-17 season. The 6-0, 170 pound forward is the son of current Director of Officiating for the National Hockey League Steven Walkom. The younger Walkom played appeared in two games with the Bulls during the Christmas Break and was able to pick up an assist.

Bulls Head Coach Matt Nicholson and Assistant coach Tony Attanucci knew Brendan Walkom when they were teaching private lessons in Pittsburgh.

"We have known Brendan has his dad Steven for a while and they are two great guys," said Matt Nicholson. "With Brendan, we wanted to bring a person like him into our program that has high character and a high hockey IQ on the ice. We need to improve on scoring for next season so we want to bring in guys who can put the puck in the net. To get a player of Brendan's quality was a great accomplishment for the Amarillo Bulls program."

Walkom currently plays for the Selects Hockey Academy 18U team that's part of the USPHL. In 14 games with the Selects team, he has eight goals and 17 assists for 25 points. Prior to that Walkom played with the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite U16 team where he scored 30 goals and added 23 assists for 53 points in 68 games.

Walkom said he is thrilled to be joining the Amarillo Bulls program.

"It's awesome and I can't wait to come to Amarillo," he said. "Both Coach Tony and Coach Matt lived in Pittsburgh the last couple of years and I had a great experience helping them out. Tony and I have gotten along with one another just from helping out with the skills sessions. Coach Matt has a lot of knowledge with RMU so I am looking forward to working with them down in Amarillo and developing my game."

Walkom said another contributing factor to being with the Bulls was the big crowd on New Year's Eve.

"I was so excited to play in front of that many fans," he said. "I was actually shocked at how big the arena was and how much it filled up on the New Year's Eve game. It was really impressive and one of the reasons why I chose to tender with Amarillo."

Walkom not only played in that game but also a second game for the Bulls in Wichita Falls. He realizes that the transition to the North American Hockey League won't be easy.

"The guys are bigger, faster, stronger and older so that is always an adversity to overcome," he commented. "In the two games, I thought I fit in well but I could have played better. When I come there next year I am looking forward to contributing points wise and play an overall better game."

Brendan Walkom is the first player to be tendered by the Amarillo Bulls for the 2016-17 season.
