CURVE/ERIE SERIES: The Altoona Curve and the Erie SeaWolves will meet up for the 17th time this season out of a scheduled 25 meetings. The SeaWolves come into the series holding a 11-5 advantage thus far and a 6-3 advantage at Jerry Uht Park. FOR ALTOONA: Derek Hankins makes his first start of the season for the Curve tonight. Hankins has missed most of this season after having his galbladder removed in early April. Since returning from the DL on 6/5, Hankins has appeared four times and allowed seven runs on 12 hits and has given up at least two runs in three of his four outings. Last season Hankins was a member of the Curve starting rotation. Hankins started 23 games in 2008 and had a 2-11 record with a 4.54 ERA. Hankins has one career start against Erie, in that start he lasted just 0.2 innings and gave up four runs on five hits in a loss on 7/11/08. FOR ERIE: RHP Luis Marte gets the start for the SeaWolves. Marte will be making his 13th start this season and comes in having won three of his previous four starts. Marte has faced the Curve twice in 2009 and has a 1-1 record and has allowed seven runs on 10 hits in his 12.0 innings this season against Altoona. Marte joined the Tigers organiza- tion as a non-drafted free agent in 2005 and was an All-star in the Florida State League last season. ALVAREZ ARRIVES: Pirates' first round draft pick Pedro Alvarez joined the Curve for his first taste of Double-A baseball Tuesday. Alvarez went 0- for-4 with three strikeouts Tuesday night. The 22-year old third baseman out of New York City comes in as the Pirates No. 1 rated prospect by Baseball America. Alvarez spent the first half of the season in Lynchburg (A) where he led the Hillcats with 14 home runs and 55 RBIs in 66 games. SERIES STARS: Brian Friday and Jason Delaney have been a nightmare for Erie pitchers. The two have combined to go 28-for-69 (.406) with 11 RBIs and 16 runs scored against the SeaWolves. SeaWolves Brennan Boesch and Ryan Strieby, who was placed on the DL today, have excelled against the Curve this season hitting seven home runs and driving home 25 runs in 15 games against Altoona. JIMMY NEEDS A JUMPSTART: Curve 2B Jim Negrych, the Pirates' reigning Minor League Player of the Year has been slumping recently. Negrych has just two hits in his last 30 at bats since 6/14 for a .067 average. APPROACHING THE BOTTOM: After Tuesday's loss to Erie the Curve are now 22 games below .500 which is just one game shy of the team's worst record -- a franchise worst at 23 games under .500 (19-42) on 6/12.
