Alouettes Launch 21st Edition of the Together at School Program
February 15, 2018 - Canadian Football League (CFL) - Montreal Alouettes News Release
Montreal, February 15, 2018 - The Montreal Alouettes launched the 21st edition of the Together at School program on Thursday morning with the Alouettes at Antoine-de-Saint-Exupéry School in Saint-Léonard.
Patrick Boivin, Montreal Alouettes' President and CEO, Geneviève Dandurand Director of the Antoine-de-Saint-Exupéry School, officials from Pointe-de-l'Ile school board, the city of Montreal, the Saint-Léonard borough, Academos and Montreal Hooked on School were on onsite. Montreal Alouettes players John Bowman, Luc Brodeur-Jourdain, Nicolas Boulay, Stephen Adekolu, Martin Bédard, Jean-Samuel Blanc, Philippe Gagnon, Seydou Jr. Haidara, Kyries Hebert, Oumar Touré, cheerleaders and mascot Touché also took part in the event.
Launched in 1998, Together at School is a community outreach program supporting high school students throughout the province. The program's main goal is to encourage kids to make good decisions and stay in school, while focusing on a wide range of challenges that are part of their reality; from academic performance to pressure and consistency, to the importance of staying active.
Since the program's inception, the players have done over 2,000 visits, reaching out to over 75,000 students.
"In over 20 years, the Alouettes have reached out to tens of thousands of students to promote school perseverance," said Mr. Boivin. "These young people represent our future and are our society's leaders of tomorrow, and we are proud to be a source of motivation for them to pursue their studies. Statistics show that youth who stay in school are more inclined to make good lifestyle choices, have good friends, and lead healthy and active lives. Therefore, we are helping form better students as well as better individuals."
Players taking part in the program must first undergo a specific training from specialists in the field of mentoring and counseling in order to be best equipped to help the students.
"If we can encourage young people not to drop out of school and persevere in their studies, we are achieving our goal," said Luc Brodeur-Jourdain, offensive lineman, who has been involved in this program for several years. "During my school visits, I have seen how much we can serve as examples and it is extremely rewarding for us."
The Alouettes will host this program in various regions of Quebec as the Together at School Tour with the Alouettes will make stops in Alma, Chicoutimi, Laval, Longueuil, Montreal, Vaudreuil-Dorion, Sainte-Thérèse, among other cities.
