Alex Henry Named Bulldogs' IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year

HAMILTON, ON - The Hamilton Bulldogs are proud to announce that defenceman Alex Henry has been named the team's winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Hamilton community during the 2010-2011 season.
Currently playing in his third consecutive and sixth overall season with the Bulldogs, Henry has been an active member of the Hamilton community in every year he's been with the team. The 31-year-old, native of Elliot Lake, Ontario seeks opportunities to participate in community events and understands that being a professional hockey player is more than just playing hockey - it's about being a role model and giving back to the community. This year the Bulldogs took part in 'Movember' for the first time, which challenged each player to grow a moustache for the entire month of November to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer. Henry took charge of this initiative by embracing the concept and encouraging his teammates to raise the most money possible. Henry actively updated his 'Movember' webpage with new pictures of his moustache and messages throughout the month. Henry was voted by the team as having the best moustache by the end of November and also raised the most money as he contributed $1,235 to the team total of $6,214. In recognition of his outstanding efforts for 'Movember' he was awarded the Bulldogs " Community Player of the Month" for November.
This past summer, Henry donated time in his off-season to be a guest instructor at the Hamilton Bulldogs Annual Summer Hockey Camp. Upon arrival at the camp, Henry immediately began interacting with the kids and participating in activities. He taught the young players new hockey skills and the importance of working hard to achieve goals. At the team's traditional Christmas visit to the McMaster Children's Hospital, Henry led his teammates in interacting with the children and singing Christmas carols. Henry always makes time for great causes and was in attendance at the launch of the 'Dawgs Breakfast Program' to show his support for the program which provides breakfast to over 2,000 students at three schools in the Hamilton area. The program will see $225,000 in cash or kind donated to the schools from the Bulldogs Foundation. Henry was instrumental in making sure the Bulldogs " My Favourite Things" charity auction was a success. He took control of getting each player to put together baskets full of their favourite items that would be auctioned off in support of Children's Aid Society Hamilton. In addition to the many individual efforts that Alex participated in this year, he also led his teammates through a number of team community events including skates and autograph sessions with fans and visits with local minor hockey teams.
Henry is now one of 30 finalists for the AHL's 2010-2011 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the AHL in the coming weeks.
The Bulldogs will return to Copps Coliseum to host the Abbotsford Heat for 7:00 p.m. games on Tuesday, March 29th and Wednesday, March 30th. All regular season Hamilton Bulldogs broadcasts on AM 820 CHAM will begin with a pre-game show 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start time.
