Beloit Sky Carp News Release

APPLETON, WI - Raul Alcantara was dominant throughout seven scoreless innings as he led the Beloit Snappers to a 7-1 vanquishing of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in Midwest League action on Thursday night at Fox Cities Stadium.

The Snappers maintain a half-game lead in the Western Division wild card race and improve to 34-25. Wisconsin is now 24-31.

Alcantara (7-1) allowed seven hits and walked one in seven innings without giving up a run. He struck out eight in his fourth start this season in which he threw shutout ball. Alcantara also stranded seven men on base. This outing lowered his ERA to a remarkable 2.65.

After four scoreless frames, Beloit broke through in the fifth against Damien Magnifico (5-1) when Brett Vertigan hustled home all the way from first on a double by Ryan Mathews.

The Snappers were still ahead 1-0 in the eighth and that's when they decided to add to their lead. With runners on first and third and two outs, Renato Nunez lined a single into center for an RBI. A Matt Olson double was good for two more and John Wooten reached on an error that brought in the game's fourth run. Another hit and a walk loaded the bases for Sam Roberts, who finished the big inning by smacking a two-run single into right for a 7-0 lead.

The Timber Rattlers avoided the shutout thanks to a Max Walla RBI single in their half of the eighth, but Brent Powers turned out the lights in the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning. Beloit will go for the sweep on Friday night in a 7:05pm match-up. RHP Michael Ynoa (0-1, 2.52 ERA) will be throwing for the Snappers and LHP Mike Strong (0-1, 3.38 ERA) is the likely starter for the Timber Rattlers.
