Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

Albuquerque (56-43) dropped the series opener to Omaha (45-53) 6-2 in the first game back from the All-Star Break. The Isotopes remain in first place by two games in the American Southern Division standings ahead of the Round Rock Express.

The Isotopes made some noise in the ninth. Matt Angle cut the deficit in half with an RBI bunt single in the frame making the score 6-3, but Albuquerque could not get any closer. Tony Gwynn Jr. (1-for-3, R, BB) scored on the play in his first game since coming off the disabled list.

Starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez (2-0, 6.93) went 4.1 innings allowing three runs on seven hits, suffering the loss. The southpaw walked two batters and struck out his season-high seven hitters.

Luis Vasquez made his first appearance of 2013 at Isotopes Park in the fifth inning. The righty struck out both batters he faced. He also inherited two runners, not allowing either to score. Angel Castro allowed three runs on four hits in an inning of work. Geison Aguasviva entered in the seventh and shut the door on Omaha, firing two scoreless innings and allowing just one hit.

Right hander Javy Guerra worked a scoreless ninth allowing a hit. He has not allowed a run in his last six appearances dating back to July 4.

Omaha put up one in the second, two in the fifth and three in the sixth taking a 6-0 lead.

Elian Herrera got the Isotopes on the board in Albuquerque's half of the sixth. John Baker led off with a single. Herrera then knocked an RBI single, scoring Baker and cutting the deficit to 6-1.

The Isotopes collected their second run of the game in the eighth. Dee Gordon tallied his second hit of the game becoming the only Isotope to record a multi-hit game on the night. Matt Angle came in to score their second run on Gordon's single. The first four hitters in the Isotopes lineup had five hits of the team's nine hits and accounted for two of the club's three RBI.

Brian Sanches (5-2, 3.68) earned the win for Omaha. The righty tossed six innings of one-run ball. He surrendered five hits and struck out two.

Albuquerque and Omaha play game two of the four-game set tomorrow, July 19 at 7:05 PM MDT. Righty Matt Magill (2-0, 2.97) will take the mound against southpaw Justin Marks (4-9, 5.42) for Omaha. Listen to all the action on 610 "The Sports Animal" with Josh Suchon on the call.
