FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS WEEK

The Albany Devils close out the 2012-13 season with three home games this weekend. They host Connecticut Friday at 7 pm, Norfolk Saturday at 5:00 pm and Adirondack Sunday at 3 pm. The Devils are coming off a pair of setbacks against Binghamton Friday (5-3) and Saturday (5-0) and a loss against Rochester Sunday (3-2).

After 73 games, the Devils are fourth in the Northeast Division and 12th in the Eastern Conference at 29-31-1-12 (71 pts.), including a 12-15-0-8 home mark. The Whale are second in the Northeast Division and tied for seventh in the conference at 35-30-6-3 (79 pts.) with a 15-16-4-1 road record. The Admirals are fourth in the East Division and tied for seventh in the conference at 37-31-4-1 (79 pts.), including a 15-18-1-1 road showing. Adirondack is fifth in the Northeast Division and 15th in the conference at 30-36-3-4 (67 pts.) with a 12-21-2-2 road record.

Sunday's game is part of "Fan Appreciation Night" and the Devils will hand out more than 40 different prizes. Additionally, the first 2,000 fans will receive a Tim Sestito bobblehead, courtesy of BBL, and the first 1,500 patrons will receive an Albany Devils backpack, sponsored by Times Union.

Fans can purchase the "Papa John's Family 4 Pack" for Sunday's game. The package includes four tickets, four Devils hats and a voucher for a large pizza and a cinnapie dessert. To purchase, fans can call 518-4-DEVILS or visit thealbanydevils.com/papa.

The Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) has donated 100 tickets to each of its 10 universal access college partners for the final "SEFCU College Night" on Friday. Special $10 tickets are still available to all college students who present appropriate identification at the Times Union Center box office.

NOTES & NUMBERS

- Albany is the third least penalized team in the Eastern Conference, averaging 15.6 penalty minutes per game. Only the 2006-07 (12.9) and 2007-08 (13.4) teams have finished with a lower average.

- Matt Anderson set a franchise record Friday when he posted his 83rd assist in a Devils uniform. The right winger passed Stephen Gionta who registered 82 assists between 2006- 13. The helper was also Anderson's team-leading 30th of the year.

- With an assist Sunday, Whitney registered his team-leading 50th point. The left-winger is now tied with Matt Taormina (2009-10) and Adam Henrique (2010-11) for seventh on the franchise's single-season point list. In 136 career AHL games, Whitney has totaled 95 points, backed by 40 goals and 55 assists.

- On Friday, Steve Zalewski registered his 11th goal of the season and first since Feb. 23 at Binghamton. The tally was his 40th point of the season, giving the Devils center 40-or-more points in four consecutive seasons.

- With a shorthanded goal and an assist Friday, Chris McKelvie registered his third multi- point game. The shorthanded tally was his second of the season and the team's ninth, which ranks tied for seventh in the AHL.

- Eric Gelinas led all scorers last week with a goal and two assists. He registered his sixth goal of the season and added an assist Friday and followed with a helper Sunday. For the season, he has 22 points, which ranks first among Devils defensemen.

- In three games last weekend, Mike Sislo registered a goal and an assist. He ranks fifth among active Devils with 24 points (12g-12a).

- David Wohlberg netted his third goal of the season when he potted a falling-down backhand shot against Rochester Sunday. All three of his tallies have come during the last nine games.

- On Sunday, the New Jersey Devils reassigned Damon Severson to Albany from Kelowna (WHL). The defenseman just completed his fourth season with the Rockets, who were eliminated from postseason play Wednesday. Severson, 18, was selected in the second round (60th overall) by New Jersey during the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. In 196 games with Kelowna, he registered 106 points (21g-85a), a +55 rating and 207 penalty minutes. This season, the Melville, SK native produced 52 points (10g-42a) and a +43 mark.

Steve Zalewski, Chris McKelvie and Eric Gelinas each scored and Jeff Frazee made 34 saves, but the Devils lost, 5-3, against the Senators Friday at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

Binghamton established a 2-0 advantage during a five minute span, bridging the first and second periods. Cole Schneider opened the scoring at 17:45 and David Dziurzynski added to Binghamton's advantage 1:08 after the intermission.

Steve Zalewski cut into Binghamton's lead at 4:44 of the second and Chris McKelvie tied the game shorthanded at 13:53. Before the end of the second, Binghamton's Mark Stone recaptured his team's lead at 16:14. Schneider scored again at 10:55 of the third and Corey Cowick made it 5-2 at 12:21. Moments later Eric Gelinas capped the scoring at 13:49.

Binghamton's Nathan Lawson notched the victory with 27 stops.

The Senators skated to a 5-0 victory against the Devils Saturday in front of 4,941 fans at Times Union Center for "Military Appreciation Night." As for the game action, the Devils compiled 35 shots on goal, but could not solve Binghamton netminder Nathan Lawson. In his fourth game of the season, Albany's Scott Wedgewood made 24 saves on 29 shots, including six in the first, 11 in the second and 12 in the third.

Binghamton's Corey Cowick registered a goal and an assist, and Fredrik Claesson, Dustin Gazley, Mark Stone and Buddy Robinson all tallied.

Claesson's shorthanded goal opened the scoring at 13:46 of the first. Gazley added a goal on the power play at 4:05 of the second and Stone found the back of the net at 15:53 before the intermission break. Robinson netted his first professional goal 13 seconds into the third and Cowick scored the game's final goal at 18:11.

For the first time this season, the Devils failed to earn a point when leading after two periods. David Wohlberg and Mike Sislo's goals led to a 2-1 Albany advantage after the second, but a pair of American tallies in the third period resulted in a 3-2 setback. In goal, Jeff Frazee made 33 saves on 36 attempts.

Rochester's Zemgus Girgensons, Cody McCormick and Mark Mancari all contributed goals and netminder Matt Hackett made 36 saves on 38 shots.

Girgensons put the Americans ahead 1-0 at 14:05 of the first with a power-play goal, but the Devils responded with two goals of their own. Wohlberg collected a rebound on a shot from Gelinas and fought off the Rochester defenseman beating Hackett. Sislo's one- timer, while on the power play, on a cross-ice feed from Whitney put the Devils ahead 2-1 at 14:27. McCormick brought the game level again at 2:05 of the third, scoring from just outside the crease and Mancari's power-play goal at 11:06 stood as the game winner.

THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS

Apr. 19 vs. Connecticut Whale

(Times Union Center)

Connecticut went winless last week, which began with a 3-2 loss at Manchester Friday. The Whale followed with a 4-3 overtime setback at Adirondack Saturday and a 4-3 loss at Springfield Sunday. In the last 10 outings, Connecticut is 4-5-1-0.

Kris Newbury leads the Whale with 61 points, backed by 19 goals and 42 helpers, and Brandon Segal is second with 43 points with 24 tallies and 19 assists. Logan Pyett leads all Whale defensemen with 39 points, including seven goals and 31 assists.

Goaltenders Jason Missiaen and Cameron Talbot have shared responsibilities. Missiaen is 10-8-2 with a 3.08 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage. Talbot is 25- 26-1 with a 2.57 goals-against average and a.920 save percentage.

Apr. 20 vs. Norfolk Admirals

(Times Union Center)

Norfolk, which has won four of its last five games, went 2-1-0-0 last week. They were victorious in back-to-back games at Worcester, winning 4-3 Friday and 4-3 in overtime Saturday. The Admirals, who are 7-3-0-0 in their last 10, lost 4-1 at Providence Sunday.

Patrick Maroon leads the Admirals with 48 points with 24 goals and 24 assists. Peter Holland and Devante Smith-Pelly rank second and third among active players. Holland has 38 points, including 19 goals and 19 assists, while Smith-Pelly has 31 points, backed by 13 goals and 18 assists.

Rookie netminders Frederik Andersen and Igor Bobkov have split time. Andersen is 14- 15-1 with a 2.12 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage. Bobkov is 11-17-0 with a 3.13 goals-against mark and a .903 save percentage.

Apr. 21 vs. Adirondack Phantoms

(Times Union Center)

Sunday's game will be the 12th and final game of the Time Warner Cable Cup -- the Devils lead 8-3. Adirondack, which is 5-3-1-1 in its last 10 outings, is coming off a 2-1-0-0 week. The team lost at Springfield, 3-2, Friday and rebounded with an overtime win against Connecticut, 4-3, Saturday. The Phantoms then defeated Binghamton in a 15 round shootout, 2-1, Sunday.

Jason Akeson leads all active Phantoms with 51 points, including 19 goals and 32 assists. Defenseman Danny Syvret is second with 38 points, backed by six goals and 32 assists.

Brian Boucher, Cal Heeter and Scott Munroe have all seen action in goal. Boucher is 6-7-1 with a 2.54 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage, while Heeter is 11-15-3 with a 2.98 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage. Munroe is 12-16-0 with a 2.78 goals-against mark and a .913 save percentage.

CDTA THANKS COLLEGES

Late April marks the end of the regular season and the final days for many local colleges.

Throughout the 2012-13 season, each Friday Devils home game at Times Union Center has featured "SEFCU College Night" with $10 tickets for all college students. For this upcoming Friday's contest against the Connecticut Whale (affiliate of the NY Rangers), CDTA is taking College Night to a new level. The organization is donating 100 tickets to each of its 10 universal access college partners for the game.

"We thought this was a great way to give back to a community that has supported us so strongly," said CDTA's Director of Marketing Jonathan Scherzer. "The Capital Region is known for its universities and what better way to celebrate than at a local sports event at Times Union Center right in the heart of our service area."

CDTA universal access partners include the University of Albany, Albany College of Pharmacy, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Skidmore College, the College of St. Rose, Schenectady County Community College, the Sage Colleges, Siena College, Hudson Valley Community College, Branford Hall Career Institute and ShopRite supermarkets.
