Albany Battles Back To Sink Admirals 2-1

November 14, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Albany River Rats News Release

ALBANY, NY-River Rats captain Pat Dwyer tied the game with 1:55 remaining in regulation and then set-up rookie Zach Boychuk for the overtime-winner as Albany defeated the Norfolk Admirals 2-1 Saturday night at the Times Union Center.

Dwyer skated down the right wing and floated a saucer pass the width of the ice to Boychuk, who ended the game with a quick wrist-shot to the top-corner at 1:46 of the extra session.

Neither team could find the net through two periods of action, but Norfolk's Radek Smolenak opened the score-sheet early in the third period by wedging a loose puck between River Rats goaltender Justin Peters and the near post. Dwyer finally put Albany on the board with under two minutes to go, sliding a Brett Carson rebound past Admirals goalie Riku Helenius to force overtime.

Albany out-shot the visitors 10-6 in an otherwise evenly-played, scoreless opening frame. The River Rats took the upper-hand in scoring opportunities during the second period and held Norfolk to four shots on goal, but the game remained scoreless through 40 minutes.

Albany goalie Justin Peters stopped 19-of-20 shots faced to earn the win as the River Rats improved to 8-7-0-2 this season. Norfolk goalie Riku Helenius allowed two goals on 27 shots for the loss, as the Admirals fell to 8-8-0-1 this year. Albany out-shot Norfolk 27-20 and went 0-for-3 on the power play; the Admirals were 0-for-1 with the man advantage.

The River Rats complete their 4-in-5 docket tomorrow afternoon in Springfield with a 3:00 p.m. East Division match-up against the Falcons. River Rats 2009-10 season and flex ticket packages are now on sale at the River Rats executive offices at the Times Union Center, by calling (518) 487-2244 or by logging onto www.albanyriverrats.com.
