Trenton Thunder News Release
(Akron, OH) - Akron scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning and held Trenton to only four hits on the night in defeating Thunder 2-1 Friday at Canal Park. Steven Wright (1-1), Toru Murata and Cody Allen combined to hold Trenton to one run for the second straight night.
After four shutout innings from starter Cory Arbiso, Preston Claiborne entered in relief to start the fifth inning with a 1-0 lead. After striking out the first batter Roberto Perez, Claiborne gave up four straight one-out hits. Juan Diaz' RBI double plated Tim Fedroff to tie the game. Two batters later Nick Weglarz single to center brought home Diaz with the eventual game-winning run.
Wright, a knuckle ball pitcher, gave up a run in the top of the first on a two-out bases-loaded walk to Jose Gil. He then settled in and went 5.2 strong innings, at one point retiring 13 consecutive Trenton batters. He walked four and struck out seven.
Arbiso, starting for the first time in 2012, went four shutout innings and gave up five hits and one walk while striking out three. Claiborne gave up two runs in two innings to take the loss, while Ryan Flannery retired six straight in a two-inning performance.
Walter Ibarra had two of Trenton's four hits and is now 4-for-6 in the series. Fedroff, Weglarz and Jared Goedert each had two hits for Akron.
The series continues Saturday afternoon with game three scheduled for a 1:05 first pitch at Canal Park. Thunder southpaw Josh Romanski (1-0) is expected to pitch against Akron lefty Giovanni Soto (1-0). Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and streaming online begins at 12:50 pm.
