Akron Racers News Release
Akron, OH - The Akron Racers are on a mission. Racers, GM, Joey Arrietta is piecing together the 2016 squad with a "Championship Attitude" as six players signed two-year deals in the past two weeks to return to Akron. Add former Canadian National Team member, Jen Gilbert (OF) and the Racers second pick (19th overall), catcher, Griffin Joiner and Shellie Robinson, the 23rd overall pick in the 2015 NPF Senior Draft, and the Racers are building a contender.
Jen Gilbert (OF) notched her first full season with the Racers in 2015, splitting her rookie campaign in 2014 playing for the Canadian National Team. Gilbert hammered out five homeruns, scored 13 runs and chipped in 13 RBIs in 2015.
Joiner, the former Kentucky Wildcat, literally jumped into the starting assignment behind the plate. Her defensive skills and ability to handle a diverse pitching staff cemented her spot in the Racers lineup. She nailed eight runners and quickly established herself as an effective field general.
Shellie Robinson followed Joiner becoming the Racers third pick in the 2015 NPF Senior Draft. The University of South Carolina-Upstate grad, delivered a solid performance in just her rookie season in the league. Robinson smashed a homerun off 2015 NPF Pitcher of the Year, Monica Abbott, in the second game of the NPF Championship Series.
"I like what I see from these three players," remarked Arrietta. "Their work ethic is key for me. Can you and will you do what it takes to get prepared and execute when your number is called? I believe there is a lot of talent in these three players we have yet to see."
