Ak-Sar-Ben Knights invite Heartland to pitch in for disaster relief
September 7, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Abbotsford Heat News Release
Omaha, NE - Moved by events on the Gulf Coast, the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights are collecting donations of money for the American Red Cross to help vicitims of Hurricane Katrina beginning Wednesday, September 7th. The Knights are encouraging people in the Heartland to visit their offices at the Omaha Civic Auditorium on Capitol Avenue to make those donations. The Knights will be accepting donations through their season opener on October 7th.
"Anyone who has watched television or read the newspaper in the last week and a half has seen these disturbing images of people in need in Louisiana and Mississippi," said Doug Soetaert, the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights' President. "We're hoping we can encourage more people in the Heartland to make a real difference in the relief efforts that are sure to last many months."
As an added incentive, those who make a donation will be entered into a drawing for two great ticket packages. One entrant will win four season tickets to the Knights' inaugural season in the American Hockey League. Another entrant will be chosen to win 20 group tickets to a game during the 2005-2006 season. If the winning entrant has made a donation on behalf of a company, that company will also receive a 30-second radio spot to air during every Knights' game broadcast on 1420 AM, the flagship station of the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights. The winning entrants will be announced after the Knights' home opener on October 7th.
The team will also be collecting donations at its preseason home game on Thursday, September 29th against Iowa at 7:00 p.m. at the Civic Auditorium and at the regular season opener on October 7th.
The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights begin their inaugural season in the American Hockey League on October 7th when they host the defending Western Conference Champions, the Chicago Wolves, at 7:00 p.m. at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. Season tickets, group tickets and mini-plans may be purchased by calling the Knights at (402) 344-4625. For more information, visit the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights' web site at www.omahaaksarbenknights.com.
The 2005-2006 season marks the 70th anniversary of the American Hockey League. The AHL continues to serve as the top developmental league for all 30 National Hockey League teams. More than 80 percent of NHL players in 2003-2004 were AHL graduates, and in 2004-2005, more than 7.1 million fans--an all-time league record--attended AHL games across North America.
