Afternoon Delight for Jackals in Trenton

February 18, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release

TRENTON, N.J. - February 18, 2013 - Behind strong goaltending and an opportunistic offense the Elmira Jackals skated to a 4-1 win over the Trenton Titans on Monday afternoon at Sun National Bank Center. The win was the Jackals' second in a row over the Titans and improved their record to 28-20-4 on the season.

Elmira brought a steady and persistent attack to the ice in the first period which produced 16 shots against Trenton goalie Scott Wedgewood. The former third round pick of the New Jersey Devils turned away all comers until the final minute of the period. Rob Bellamy snared his own rebound in the high slot and slipped a shot between Wedgewood's pads for his 11th goal of the season which came with only 13 seconds left in the third. Fellow Devils goalie prospect Maxime Clermont stopped each of the nine he faced to ensure the Jackals could take the lead into the second.

The middle stanza was a near carbon copy of the first with the Jackals using a 16-7 shot advantage to maintain control. Elmira's lone goal came off of a Trenton turnover at center. After Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel poked the puck loose, Brandon Blandina took off down the left wing and spotted Jean Bourbeau driving to the net. After a quick centering pass, Bourbeau one-timed home his 17th goal of the season to give Elmira a 2-0 lead. That goal proved to be crucial as Wedgewood shut Elmira down the rest of the period and Trenton brought heavy pressure early in the third.

After a strong cycling play in the left wing corner, Jacob Cepis found himself alone behind the Elmira net. He cut quickly to the front and took a wraparound shot that was stopped by Clermont. Cepis lifted his own rebound home, though, for his 15th goal of the season and cut Elmira's lead to one. The lead came under heavy fire when Trenton was awarded a power play just before the third was halfway over. Clermont, and the rest of the penalty killers, used that time to shine, though, and kept Trenton from drawing even. The Jackals' two goal lead was restored when Jordon Southorn blasted home a slap shot from the point with 6:50 to play. In the final minute the Titans pulled Wedgewood for the extra attacker but Bellamy scored into the empty net to salt away the win for the Jackals.

Clermont stopped 30 shots to claim his 13th win of the season. The Jackals ended the game 0-for-1 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
