af2 Names Players of the Week

July 22, 2003 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - Cape Fear offensive specialist ANTHONY HINES, Rochester wide receiver/defensive back OMAR BAKER and Hawaii defensive specialist EDDIE KLANESKI have been named Offensive Player, Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 17 of the 2003 season.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Hines (5'11, 185, Winston Salem State), in his second season, rewrote the af2 record books with a stunning 19-catch performance for Cape Fear in the Wildcat's 48-41 victory over Atlantic Division rival Norfolk. Hines' 19 receptions break the af2 single game record of 18 set by Albany's COREY HILL last season. Six of the WR/DB's receptions were for touchdowns tying him for third all-time for receiving scores in a game. Only Birmingham's WAYNE THOMAS, in 2001, and Quad City's SHON KING, in 2000, caught more touchdown passes in a single game. Wildcat QB, BRIAN SNYDER, found Hines in the end zone twice in the fourth quarter. The first score turned a 34-33 lead into a 41-33 advantage, and the second proved to be the decisive game-winner. Hines finished the day with 222 yards, the third highest total of the season. Hines holds the record for most yards in a single game this season with 232 at Rochester on June 13.

IRONMAN OF THE WEEK

Baker (5-11, 190, SUNY-Morrisville), a rookie, wins his first af2 weekly award after stepping in to replace the injured DEREK BAKER for the Brigade. The rookie tallied eight receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns, returned six kickoffs for 72 yards, picked off a KENTA YAGI pass and recovered a fumble. Despite a solid all-round performance from Baker, the Brigade fell short of Northeast Division rival Albany 69-63. Baker hauled in a 39-yard bomb from JASON VISCONTI on Rochester's first drive of the game. Baker's interception late in the fourth quarter led to a Brigade touchdown as time expired.

ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Klaneski (5'10'', 190, Hawaii), in his second season, helped the Islanders hold San Diego to just 26 points and claim its first Western Division title. Klaneski picked off two passes in the game for 12 yards. His interception off WELSEY PHILLIPS in the third quarter ended a threatening San Diego drive as the Islanders protected a slim 27-20 lead. Klaneski also starred on special teams, returning four kickoffs for 99 yards and a missed field goal for 19 yards. Hawaii scored two touchdowns on drives after Klaneski returns.

Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Quad City's Tony Zimmerman and Ira Gooch, Florida's Ken Mastrole, Macon's Jacques Rumph, Peoria's Jack Walker and Hawaii's Darnell Arceneaux.
