Aeros Sweep Curve in Twinbill

April 29, 2012 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

Akron, OH - The Akron Aeros won both games of a doubleheader against the Altoona Curve on Sunday at Canal Park, completing a three-game series sweep in the process. Game one, re-scheduled from Saturday's rainout, was supposed to last seven innings yet extended until the 13th inning when the Aeros notched a 4-3 walk-off win. In the second game, the Aeros edged the Curve again in walk-off fashion in a close, 3-2 ballgame. Each winning run was scored by second baseman Ryan Rohlinger.

In game one, Akron's Michel Hernandez delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the 13th inning, driving home Rohlinger to give the Aeros a dramatic 4-3 victory.

The star of the game was the Akron bullpen, which combined for 8 1/3 innings of one-run ball. Aeros right hander Preston Guilmet (1-0) allowed one run over two innings to notch his first win of the season. Matt Langwell and Kyle Landis combined for 6 1/3 innings of one-hit relief. Landis retired all ten batters he faced and struck out four to shut down the Altoona lineup. Collectively, the Aeros scattered just nine hits and allowed one earned run.

Hernandez and Jared Goedert each drove in a run to lead the Aeros. Goedert went 2-4 with two walks to remain among the Eastern League leaders in batting average and on-base percentage.

In game two, both teams had trouble mounting an offensive attack, as they collected just 12 hits, combined. Rohlinger was 1-3, with a walk and scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh. Chun Chen rebounded from a disappointing first game to go 2-4, with a run scored, recording the Aeros only multi-hit performance of the second game.

T.J. McFarland went the distance for the Aeros going seven innings to notch his fourth win of the season, tied for the most in the Eastern League. McFarland allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk, while striking out one batter. McFarland's ability to eat innings was crucial to an Akron ballclub that had stretched its bullpen in the previous game.

The Aeros (14-6) have beaten the Curve in four of the five games against them this season, and currently carry a five-game winning streak. With the win, the Aeros remain in sole possession of first place in the Western Division of the Eastern League.

The Curve (8-13) pitching staff was largely effective on the day, yet was unable to match the Aeros pitching dominance. The Curve staff punched out a combined 19 Aeros on the day, yet came up empty-handed in the win column. With the loss, Altoona falls to last place in the Western Division.

The Aeros will begin a four game series against the Binghamton Mets at Canal Park on Monday at 7:05. Monday is Dollar Dog Monday at Canal Park, followed by College Fair Day on Tuesday. The series against the Mets will conclude the Aeros seven-game homestand. RHP Steven Wright (2-1, 1.46) will start for the Aeros. He will oppose LHP Darin Gorski (2-0, 2.75) of the Mets. Aeros games are broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
