Aerodynamics...

Pass the Bubbly...The Aeros clinched a playoff spot last night, defeating Bowie 11-5 and in the process ensuring that Akron will finish no worse than second in the Southern Division. 3B Lonnie Chisenhall had a huge night, mashing a pair of towering home runs and driving in three runs. Four Aeros finished with multi-hit nights as the club pounded out 15 hits overall, and CF Jose Constanza also tied a team season-high with four runs scored. On the hill, RHP Josh Tomlin rebounded from a rocky first inning in which he allowed two unearned runs to notch his 13th win of the season, passing Reading left-hander Joe Savery for the league lead. Akron finished with a split in the four-game series and also played .500 ball at 4-4 on the eight-game road trip, and is now the first team in the Eastern League with 40 victories both at home and on the road.

More Work to Do...Although the Aeros did confirm what has been in the works since starting the year 28-8 by qualifying for the playoffs, Akron can still enjoy another celebration this evening in front of the home faithful. The Aeros have a magic number of two to clinch the Southern Division title over Reading, meaning that if Akron wins tonight AND Reading loses at home to Bowie the Aeros will earn their first regular-season division title since 2006 and third in five years.

I Love the 80s...Akron also made history with last night's victory, reaching the 80-win plateau for the fifth straight season. The Aeros are now the first team in the 86-year history of the Eastern League to ever win at least 80 games in five consecutive years, breaking a tie with the 1976-79 West Haven Yankees. Akron has averaged just over 82 wins per season the past five years (including the 80 and counting this season), and has qualified for the playoffs in all five of these seasons.

Hey Now, You're An All-Star...C Carlos Santana and RHP Jeanmar Gomez were named to the Eastern League's season ending All-Star team, the league announced today. Santana is batting .285 entering play tonight while ranking second in the league with 21 home runs and 89 runs batted in. The native of Santo Domingo, DR also ranks third in the league with a .410 on-base percentage, is tied for third with 50 extra-base hits, and sits fourth with both a .523 slugging percentage and 82 runs scored. Santana has also already set an Aeros single-season record with 84 walks on the year, and needs just one more RBI to become only the third player in team history with at least 90 RBI in a season. Gomez meanwhile is 10-4 with a 3.09 ERA, and is tied for fourth in the league in wins, second in ERA, and is tied for fifth with 101 strikeouts. Both he and Santana were also named to the mid-season All-Star team as members of the Southern Division squad.

Did You Know...In addition to taking over the league lead in victories, Josh Tomlin's 13th win also put him into the franchise record book. Tomlin is just the seventh player in team history with at least 13 wins in a single season.
