Aerodynamics...

Splitsville...The visiting Binghamton Mets managed a split in their four-game series with the Aeros, defeating Akron 1-0 in 10 innings in front of 3,212 fans at Canal Park Monday evening. It was the eighth time the Aeros were shutout this season, and the third time the team lost by the exact score of 1-0. The game started off as a duel between starters Jeanmar Gomez and Dylan Owen, as they matched each other pitch for pitch in silencing the opposing bats. Akron reliever Carlton Smith followed Gomez's six scoreless innings with three frames of no-hit baseball, and the Aeros went into extra innings for only the seventh time this year. Closer Vinnie Pestano took the loss as he permitted the lone run of the game on a two-out single by Josh Thole down the left field line, scoring Ruben Tejada and giving the Mets just their 11th victory in their past 39 games.

Give Me More Gomez...It was the sixth quality start of the season for the 21-year-old Gomez, as he allowed only five hits and three walks while striking out four batters while taking the no-decision. Since his promotion from Class A Kinston April 30th, he has been one of the most consistent starters on the team and is 6-2 with a 2.79 ERA. His 91.2 innings pitched are the most for any player in the Indians minor league system, and the native of Caracas, VZ now ranks seventh in the Eastern League in ERA. Gomez made history back on May 21st at Waterfront Park in Trenton, as he retired all 27 batters en route to just the second nine-inning perfect game in the 86-year history of the league, and the first for the Akron franchise.

The Scoreless Style...Several Aeros pitchers have extended their impressive scoreless innings streaks over the past few games against Binghamton. Smith had his seventh straight shutout relief outing yesterday, bringing his stretch to 16.2 innings while Rondon notched his third scoreless start in a row Friday night to bring his streak to 14.1 innings. Steven Wright provided two scoreless innings of relief Saturday to bring his streak to 12.2 innings spanning seven contests, and not to be outdone, relievers Erik Stiller and Matt Meyer have now tossed nine and eight innings, respectively, without allowing a run.

Bowie Bad for Bats...The Aeros head to Prince George's Stadium tonight for the beginning of a five-game series against the third-place Bowie Baysox, winners of 11 of their last 15. Akron has won seven of the 11 games between the teams this season, but as a team the offense is batting only .207. The pitching staff has been the difference by posting a 2.77 ERA and allowing only 33 walks compared to 67 walks for the Baysox staff. Bowie and the Aeros will have plenty of time to become reacquainted, as the two teams will play 15 more games against each other in the second half (including this five-game set).

The Walk of Life...Honored yesterday as the Player of the Week in the Eastern League, left fielder Nick Weglarz drew a walk n the fourth yesterday to extend his consecutive game on-base streak to 23, the second longest streak in the league this season.
