Aeros Game Notes

June 1, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

Monday Madness... The Aeros won 7-6 against the Mets Monday afternoon, earning a split in the four-game series in Binghamton. It was back-and-forth early as a Jared Goedert two-run home run in the third inning put Akron on top with a 3-2 lead. The B-Mets bounced back with two runs in the bottom half of that inning before a pair of walks, a wild pitch and an error gave the Aeros the lead again at 5-4. Binghamton center fielder Kirk Nieuewenheis then delivered a go-ahead two-run shot to right, once again giving the hosts a narrow one-run edge through four innings. An RBI single from Akron second baseman Cord Phelps tied the game in the fifth and Tim Fedroff scored on a John Drennen sac fly in the seventh to provide for the final margin of the day. Aeros reliever Connor Graham (2-2) earned the win with two shutout innings of relief while B-Mets pitcher Scott Shaw (4-4) took the loss and Omar Aguilar earned his second save for Akron by working out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth.

Bullpen Blossoms... Graham and Aguilar led the charge for the Aeros pitching staff Monday against Binghamton, delivering a combined four shutout innings in relief of lefty starter Kelvin De La Cruz. The bullpen now has a 4.14 ERA on the season and the performance yesterday was another in a long line of dominant recent performances. Akron relievers now have a 2.52 ERA in the last 23 games dating back to May 8th at Reading, recording 78 total strikeouts against 32 walks in 82 innings pitched.

Heat Check... The third inning homer by Goedert Monday continued an incredible streak for the Aeros starting third baseman. The home run was his third in as many games and he now has hit safely in 20 consecutive contests, just two behind the all-time franchise record. Goedert is currently tied with Ryan Mulhern, who hit in 20 straight games during the 2005 season.

Perez Performs... Backup catcher Miguel Perez finished 2-5 at the plate Monday against the B-Mets, extending his own personal streak of consistent hitting hitting. The 26-year-old Venezuela native now has a seven game hitting streak and is batting .367 on the season with four multi-hit performances and four RBI although he has only appeared in eight games in Double-A this year.

Hagadone Arrives... Akron made a roster move Tuesday afternoon as reliever Zach Putnam was placed on the disabled list retroactive to May 29th and lefty prospect Nick Hagadone was received from Class-A Kinston. Putnam was sidelined with right rhomboid tightness and the 24-year-old Hagadone will be starting tonight followed by normally scheduled starter Paolo Espino.

Howling at the Moon... Tonight's game begins a three-game home stand for the Aeros against the Erie SeaWolves. The Wolves are a Western Division rival and Akron actually knocked the team out of playoff contention last season with a four-game sweep to end the regular season. Erie won two out of three at Jerry Uht Stadium earlier this month in the only series thus far in 2010.
