Aeros Fall 3-0 in Regular Season Finale at Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City, OK - The Houston Aeros (40-26-5-5, 90 points) were defeated by the Oklahoma City Barons (40-25-2-9, 91 points) 3-0 on Sunday night in front of 3,527 fans at the Cox Convention Center in the regular season finale for both teams. Oklahoma City goalie Niko Hovinen (5-3-2) stopped 20 Aeros shots for his first shutout of the season. Houston goalie Josh Harding (1-1-0) stopped 23 of 25 in two periods of play, taking the loss, as the Aeros fell to 19-15-2-2 on the road this year. Goalie Mike Condon played the third period, stopping five of six shots in relief. Forwards Chris VandeVelde scored twice and Toni Rajala also scored for Oklahoma City. Houston will be the six seed in the playoffs against the Grand Rapids Griffins in a best-of-five Western Conference Quarter Final series. Playoff tickets go on sale at 3 p.m. Monday.

After a scoreless first period, Toni Rajala put the Barons ahead 1-0 at 6:11 of the second period. Randy Jones had his shot from the point stopped by Harding, but Rajala was there for the rebound and his 17th goal of the season. Philippe Cornet also had an assist on the goal. The Barons extended the lead to 2-0 at 16:13 of the second with a Chris VandeVelde shorthanded goal. Tanner House stole the puck out of the defensive zone and broke away with VandVelde for a 2-on-1 breakaway. VandeVelde fired a shot from the slot past a screened Josh Harding.

VandeVelde made it 3-0 at 19:40 of the third period, sending one from the defensive blue line into the goal as Mike Condon began to leave the ice for the extra attacker but could not get back in goal in time to stop the puck.
