Akron RubberDucks News Release

Eighth is Enough...The Akron offense awoke in a big way in the late going last night, as the Aeros struck for five runs in the bottom of the eighth against three Trenton relievers en route to a 5-2 victory over the Thunder. The win marked Akron's 14th triumph in its last 17 games, and ninth win in the last 10. The contest was scoreless through five innings (both teams had just one hit), but Trenton broke through for a pair of two-out runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead. The Aeros responded in the eighth however, as two walks and a bunt single loaded the bases with none out. SS Carlos Rivero then cut the margin in half with an RBI single to center, and LF Nick Weglarz provided the difference with a grand slam to left-center. It was the sixth time this season that the Aeros have won when trailing after seven innings, tied with Portland for most in the Eastern League.

Going on Rehab...Indians LHP Aaron Laffey made the rehab start for Akron last night and delivered four innings of one-hit baseball, allowing just one walk and striking out four. The performance marked his second rehab start since suffering a strained right oblique May 22nd at Cincinnati, and he is expected to pitch for the Aeros again Sunday afternoon against Binghamton. Cleveland SS Asdrubal Cabrera also made a rehab start last night, his first appearance since hurting his left shoulder while breaking up a double play June 2nd at Minnesota. Cabrera, who played the first six innings before yielding to Rivero, went 0-3 at the plate and handled all four of his chances in the field routinely. He will leadoff and play all nine innings tonight and will serve as the designated hitter in the series finale Thursday afternoon.

Consistent Constanza...The Aeros only managed one hit through the first seven frames last night, but a bunt single to load the bases with nobody out in the eighth inning extended CF Jose Constanza's hitting streak to six games. He finished 1-4 on the night, and this recent stretch marks the third time this season he has hit safely in six or more consecutive games, as he already has two seven-game hitting streaks to his credit. The native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic is batting .284 in 63 games this season, and is tied with Quintin Berry of Reading for the Eastern League lead with 21 steals.

Lucky Number Seven (teen)...There has been something quite special about the number 17 for the Aeros lately, as in their past 17 contests the Aeros are out-scoring their opponents by the whopping margin of 83-29, and are arguably playing their best baseball of the season. Also sporting today's fortunate number is DH Carlos Rivero, who got the Aeros on the board in the eighth inning yesterday and leads all Eastern League shortstops in fielding percentage.

Did You Know...Yesterday's win plus a third straight loss by the Birmingham Barons (Chicago White Sox, Southern League) moved gave the Aeros the best winning percentage in professional baseball at .681 (Birmingham is at .676).
