Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk Admirals today announced that they have recalled defenseman Nick Schaus from the ECHL's Fort Wayne Komets and signed defenseman Kevin Gagne to an Amateur Tryout Contract (ATO).
Schaus, 5-foot-11, 200-pounds, has appeared in 18 games with the Admirals this season, netting a goal and three points with 17 penalty minutes. A 26-year-old native of Orchard Park, New York, Schaus has appeared in 144 career AHL games between the Worcester Sharks, Syracuse Crunch and Norfolk Admirals, netting nine goals and 33 points with 95 penalty minutes. In 14 career Calder Cup Playoff games between the Sharks and Crunch, Schaus has notched five assists and 23 penalty minutes.
Schaus posted five goals and 17 points in 26 games with the Komets this season, tying for the lead in goals by a defenseman. In 36 career ECHL games between the Komets and Elmira Jackals, Schaus has recorded six goals and 22 points with 62 penalty minutes. Fort Wayne's season concluded last weekend.
Prior to turning pro, Schaus appeared in 148 games over four seasons at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He registered 29 goals and 83 points with 220 penalty minutes. An undrafted defenseman, Schaus signed as a free agent with the San Jose Sharks following the conclusion of his collegiate career. Schaus signed an AHL Standard Player's Contract with the Admirals on September 21, 2012.
Gagne, 5-foot-8, 175-lbs, recently concluded his fifth season in the QMJHL, where he suited up with the Saint John Sea Dogs and Rimouski Oceanic. In 62 games during his final junior season, Gagne set career highs with 17 goals, 54 assists and 71 points. He ranked first in assists, second in points and third in goals among defensemen in the QMJHL in 2012-13. Among all QMJHL players, Gagne's 33 power play assists ranked second and his six game-winning goals were tied for sixth.
A native of Edmundston, New Brunswick, Gagne skated in 300 career QMJHL games between Saint John and Rimouski, where he recorded 39 goals and 173 points. The undrafted blueliner made the QMJHL playoffs in each of his five seasons in league. While with Saint John, Gagne won the prestigious Memorial Cup as champions of the CHL in 2011 and won the President's Trophy as QMJHL champions in 2011 and 2012. In 51 career QMJHL playoff matches, Gagne recorded five goals and 25 points.
The Admirals' NHL parent club, the Anaheim Ducks, signed Gagne to a three-year, entry-level contract on March 6, 2013.
The Admirals will conclude a five-game homestand with contests against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins tonight before the Binghamton Senators invade Scope on Friday and Saturday nights.
