Admirals Look To Turn Things Around On The Road

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk Admirals will look to turn things around during a seven-game road trip that kicks off on Friday in Springfield.

Last week started out on a high note for the Admirals, as Mark Parrish's goal with seven seconds left in regulation helped Norfolk to defeat Hershey 4-3 on Wednesday at Scope to end the Bears' 12-game winning streak. On Friday, Ty Wishart scored twice but the Admirals fell to the Adirondack Phantoms 3-2 at Scope. In the Saturday rematch, a season-high crowd of 6,582 fans turned out for Pink in the Rink to benefit the Tidewater Affiliate of Susan G. Komen For the Cure. However, the Admirals again fell to the Phantoms 3-1. After Saturday's game, the Tampa Bay Lightning relieved Darren Rumble of his head coaching duties and named Jim Johnson head coach. Johnson had been serving as Norfolk's associate coach.

The Admirals will kick off a busy stretch of road contests on Friday in Springfield, Saturday in Manchester and Sunday in Lowell. The Admirals will return to Scope for a six-game homestand beginning on Wednesday, February 3 against the Hershey Bears.

EAST DIVISION STANDINGS

At 17-23-2-0 (36 points), the Admirals are in seventh place in the American Hockey League's East Division but are just six points back of third place. The East is led by the Hershey Bears (32-9-0-2, 66 pts). They are followed by the Albany River Rats (23-16-2-2, 50 pts), Adirondack Phantoms (20-18-2-0, 42 pts), Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (20-20-1-1, 42 pts), Binghamton Senators (17-18-3-1, 38 pts) and Syracuse Crunch (16-21-3-3, 38 pts).

ADMIRALS' LOG

- A season-high crowd of 6,582 fans witnessed Saturday night's Pink in the Rink to benefit the Tidewater Affiliate of Susan G. Komen For the Cure.

- Norfolk's five best-attended games this season have all been in the past six home contests.

- After scoring just one goal in 61 games with the Admirals last season, Ty Wishart scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season on Friday night vs. Adirondack in the first multiple-goal game of his professional career.

- Wishart's six goals are tied for 13th among AHL defensemen while his three power play goals are tied for 11th among defensemen.

- The Admirals will play seven road games in ten days beginning on Friday in Springfield.

- Dustin Tokarski stopped all five shots he faced as he made his NHL debut in relief for the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday at Florida.

ADMIRALS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Mark Parrish: 3GP, 1G, 2A, 3PTS

Mark Parrish netted points in all three of Norfolk's games last week. On Wednesday, Parrish's goal with seven seconds left in regulation helped the Admirals to stop Hershey's 12-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory. On Friday, Parrish assisted on Ty Wishart's first period power play goal in an eventual 3-2 setback to Adirondack. On Saturday, Parrish set up Ryan Craig's second period power play goal but Norfolk fell 3-1 to the Phantoms.

Parrish has nine goals and eight assists in 32 games with Norfolk this season. The veteran forward leads the Admirals with six goals and twelve points since December 5. Parrish ranks fourth in goals and sixth in points on the team.

All students have to do is show their valid, current student ID at the Scope Box Office after 2:00 p.m. on the day of the game and receive a White Level ticket for just $8 (normally $12). This offer is not available anywhere other than the Scope Box Office. This great deal is available for all Tuesday and Wednesday night home games.

Student Rush tickets will also get students $5.99 menu items at Baxter's Sports Lounge before and after the game that night. Baxter's Sports Lounge is located just behind Norfolk Scope at 500 Granby Street. Students of any age with Student Rush tickets will be permitted into Baxter's prior to game time. SCOUTING REPORT

The Admirals will kick off a seven-game road trip with a three games in three nights against Atlantic Division opponents this weekend. Norfolk is 5-5-0-0 against the Atlantic this season with a 3-3-0-0 road record.

The trip kicks off on Friday with the first contest this season against the Springfield Falcons. At 14-22-8-2, the Falcons round out the Atlantic Division in eighth place with 38 points. Left wing Charles Linglet leads Springfield with 47 points in 46 games this season (10G, 37A). Right wing Colton Fretter leads the Falcons with 16 goals. With #1 goaltender Devan Dubnyk (10-12-1, 2.99, .916) on recall to the parent Edmonton Oilers, Jean-Philippe Levasseur (3-9-0, 3.40, .897) has taken the goaltending reins and is on a three-game winning streak. Springfield has points in four of its last five games (3-1-1-0) including a 6-3 victory over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in their last game last night. They do not play again before hosting the Admirals on Friday.

The Admirals then travel to Manchester for the fourth and final game against the Monarchs this season on Saturday. Norfolk is 2-1-0-0 against Manchester this season - including a 2-1 shootout victory on November 18 in New Hampshire. At 26-13-1-4, the Monarchs lead the Atlantic Division and rank third overall in the AHL with 57 points. The story in Manchester all season has been goaltending as Jonathan Bernier (18-10-4, 2.01, .939) and Jeff Zatkoff (8-4-0, 2.22, .934) have been spectacular. Rookie center Corey Elkins leads the Monarchs in goals (13) and points (29). The Monarchs have points in five of their last seven games (3-2-0-2) including a 4-1 home victory against Hartford last night. They will visit the Wolf Pack on Friday before hosting the Admirals on Saturday.

Mike McKenna, Louis Robitaille and the Lowell Devils will provide the Admirals with their last opponent of the week on Sunday afternoon. The Admirals dropped a 2-1 decision on November 20 in Massachusetts in the only prior meeting between the clubs this season. With 54 points, the Devils (25-16-3-1) are just three points back of Manchester for the Atlantic Division lead. Balanced scoring has been the trademark of the Devils this season. Rookie Nick Palmieri (15G) leads a group of seven Devils with double-digit goal totals while center Ben Walter (32 points) is one of 11 Lowell players with more than 20 points this season. Former Admiral Mike McKenna leads the Devils with a 14-8-1 record, two shutouts, a 2.30 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage. Lowell is 6-3-0-1 in its last ten games including a 3-2 shootout setback versus Portland on Saturday night in their last action. The Devils visit Providence on Friday and Portland on Saturday before hosting the Admirals on Sunday.
