Norfolk Admirals News Release

?NORFOLK, VA. - The Norfolk Admirals scored three goals in just under two minutes to end the second period, hopping to a 4-2 victory over the Greenville Swamp Rabbits Wednesday night at Scope Arena.

The Admirals kicked off their final homestand of the season against the Swamp Rabbits after coming off a three-game road skid. Norfolk struck first when forward Steven Whitney shoved one in past Greenville netminder, Alain Valiquette. Robbie Czarnik took a shot from the bottom of the left circle that was denied, but Whitney, on his first night back after missing the last three due to injury, was there at the doorstep to push it in and notch his 22nd of the season at 4:56 of the opening frame.

Greenville responded at 12:16 when Josh Nicholls hit twine, unassisted. Nicholls sliced through the Norfolk zone and muscled through and around a Norfolk defender, unloading the puck past Nic Riopel. The first period would end deadlocked, 1-1.

Late in the middle frame, the Swamp Rabbits broke the tie. Near the end of Danick Gauthier's double-minor penalty for high-sticking, Tommy Thompson's slap shot from the right ring hit top shelf, edging Greenville ahead, 2-1, at 16:39. This did not sit well with the Admirals, and they retaliated with not one, but three goals of their own to finish out the second period.

Braden Christoffer notched the equalizer at 17:27 after Danick Gauthier set him up in the slot. Whitney followed just 33 seconds later to net his second of the night and regain the Admirals' lead, 3-2, at the 18-minute mark. But, they were not done. A little over one minute later, and with 35 seconds left in the middle period, Whitney threw one over to Alexis Loiseau, who's wrister from the left circle would zip past Valiquette and give Norfolk the two-goal advantage going into the final frame.

The final 20 minutes of regulation resulted in no further tallies, securing the Admirals' fourth consecutive home win. The Admirals carried the lead into the third period for the 22nd time tonight, and have a record of 19-2-1-0 in those games. Riopel intercepted 36 of 38 total Swamp Rabbit attempts, with Valiquette denying 26 of Norfolk's 30 shots. Greenville converted on one of their six man advantages, while the Admirals went 0-for-2.

The Admirals will be back at Scope Friday night to host the first of two back-to-back games-their last two of the season-against the South Carolina Stingrays at 7:30 p.m.

Three Stars:

1. NOR - 21 Whitney

2. NOR - 22 Loiseau

3. NOR - 33 Riopel
