Norfolk Admirals News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA - Kyle Wanvig forced overtime by scoring with three minutes left in regulation and Paul Szczechura netted the game winner in the 41 seconds into overtime as the Norfolk Admirals (29-44-2-5) closed out the 2007-08 season with a 3-2 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (47-26-3-4) on Saturday night at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.
The Penguins took a 1-0 lead late in the opening period. Nathan Smith spotted a loose puck in the low slot and skated un-impeded on Admirals goaltender Marc Denis. Smith deked a forehand shot before lifting a backhander over Denis' left leg at 14:53.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton doubled their lead in the final minute of the first period. Dave Gove eluded the check of a Norfolk defender in the right circle and sent a backhand shot from the bottom of the circle that beat Denis high to the glove side at 19:31.
Dana Tyrell put Norfolk on the board 7:47 into the second stanza. Blair Jones spotted a loose puck behind the net and sent it to the goalmouth. Tyrell chipped the pass over the outstretched left leg of Penguins netminder John Curry and into the net for his first professional goal.
Kyle Wanvig forced overtime with less than three minutes to play in the final frame. The Admrials' leading scorer sent a slap shot from the top of the right faceoff circle that eluded Curry stick-side at 17:35.
Paul Szczechura gave the Admirals their first overtime victory of the season just 41 seconds into the extra session. He picked up a rebound at the right wall and sent a shot over Curry's left shoulder.
Marc Denis (29 shots, 27 saves) earned the win. David Brown (31 shots, 28 saves) was saddled with the loss.
Norfolk was 0-1 on the power play. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 0-2.
