Admirals Fall to Stars in Shoot-out

March 31, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL) - Milwaukee Admirals News Release

Milwaukee, WI- The Admirals held a 2-1 lead heading into the third period, but couldn't hold on as they dropped a 3-2 shootout decision to the Texas Stars on Wednesday night at the Bradley Center.

Dave Scatchard posted a goal and an assist, while Chet Pickard made 28 saves on the night, as the Ads were able to grab a point in the standings to move four ahead of Peoria for the fourth and final playoff spot in the West Division. The Admirals host the Rivermen on Friday night at 7:00 pm in a critical divisional affair.

The Admirals applied strong net pressure in the early going. But an errant pass off the stick of Robert Dietrich was intercepted by Texas' Aaron Gagnon who made the Admirals pay for the mistake by beating the Admirals' Chet Pickard past his glove for a 1-0 Texas lead early in the first.

Tempers flared at the red line shortly after the early visitors' goal. Admirals' winger Triston Grant and Texas' Raymond Sawada got in to an altercation that ended with Grant pushing Sawada over the boards and into the Milwaukee bench.

At 4:16 of the second period a tripping call sent Milwaukee's Grant to the box, leaving Milwaukee short-handed and in danger of falling further behind the visiting Stars. But Dave Scatchard tallied an equalizer after pilfering Texas' Garret Stafford at the Texas blue line and ripping a breakaway wrist shot past Matt Climmie glove to even the game 1-1 at 4:12 of the second period.

The Admirals took the lead at the 14:55 mark of the second period. Chet Pickard provided some clutch net minding as bodies piled up in the crease, pushing the Admirals tender deep into his own net. Somehow the Admirals managed to poke the puck free and took off down the ice with a three-on- two-advantage. Mike Santorelli stickhandled up the right side before he found a free skating Jon Blum at the left circle, Blum went top shelf and lit the lamp for a 2-1 lead.

Pickard was strong for the majority of the third period before surrendering a goal to Texas' Gagnon at 13:09 of the third. Gagnon drove through the left circle before flipping a backhanded wrister past Pickard's stick side to bring both sides to even in the scoring column at 2-2. The goal was Gagnon's second of the night, accounting for all of Texas' offense.

Three periods wasn't enough to settle the matter on this night and after five minutes of scoreless four-on-four hockey.

After three successful attempts by Texas, the Admirals Robert Dietrich was provided the opportunity to extend the shootout and keep the Ads alive, however Texas' Climie rose to the challenge and denied Dietrich's wrist shot attempt with his right leg pad to deny the Admirals a victory in front of their home fans.
