Admirals Fall to Checkers in Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. - Patrick Maroon gave Norfolk a first period lead, but the Admirals (14-17-2-0) fell to the Charlotte Checkers (20-11-2-3), 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Goaltender Frederik Andersen (7-9-0) st opped 29 of 31 shots for Norfolk.

Next up for the Admirals is a contest in New York against the Syracuse Crunch on Friday night. The Admirals return to Norfolk Scope Arena on Tuesday, January 15th, to battle the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

The Admirals took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period with a power play goal. Maroon sent a shot from the right circle that Charlotte goaltender Dan Ellis blocked. Kyle Palmieri found the rebound in the slot and sent a shot that Maroon tipped into the net at 10:37 for Maroon's eleventh goal of the season.

Charlotte tied the game at 1-1 with a shorthanded goal late in the second period. Zac Dalpe entered the attacking zone on a two-on-one. He sent a shot from the right circle that eluded Andersen at 15:38.

The Checkers took a 2-1 lead early in the third period. Charlotte's Tim Wallace forced a turnover in the right corner. Chris Terry picked up the puck and skated into the slot, sending a shot past the right leg of Andersen at 2:21.

Jerome Samson closed out scoring at 17:16 of the final frame. Dalpe forced a turnover in the right corner and began to skate towards the back of the net. Just before he would have gone behind the net, Dalpe centered the puck to Jerome Samson, who sent a shot past the left leg of Andersen for a 3-1 Charlotte lead.

Dan Ellis (8-7-2) st opped 28 of 29 shots for Charlotte.

Norfolk was 1-for-4 on the power play. Charlotte was 0-for-2.
