Admirals Drop Seesaw Battle with Pirates in Shootout

Juraj Simek scored twice and Marc-Antoine Pouliot had a goal and two assists, but the Norfolk Admirals (5-2-0-1) fell in a shootout to the Portland Pirates (7-2-0-0), 6-5, on Friday night at Norfolk Scope Arena. The same two teams meet tomorrow night at Scope.
James Wright and Ty Wishart also scored for Norfolk in the game, which featured four lead changes. Portland received a pair of goals from Marc-Andre Gragnani and a goal and two assists from Luke Adam. Mark Mancari and Drew Schiestel also scored for the Pirates.
Goals by Mancari at 1:40 and Gragnani at 8:49 gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead midway through the first period. However, the Admirals responded with goals by Wright at 11:15 and Simek at 14:22 to tie the game at 2-2 before the first intermission.
After Gragnani put Portland up by a goal 1:30 into the second stanza, Norfolk took its first lead of the game after Simek's second goal of the game at 2:02 and Pouliot's marker at 4:07. However, Schiestel put the game back into a 4-4 deadlock at 10:27 of the second period.
Wishart put the Admirals on top 5-4 with 8:48 remaining in regulation. However, Adam sent the game to overtime with his game-tying goal with 5:17 remaining.
In the shootout, former Admiral Mark Parrish scored in the first round for Portland before Simek scored to tie the game in the third round for Norfolk. In the fifth and final round, Derek Whitmore scored for the Pirates while Paul Szczechura was denied for the Admirals, giving the visitors the victory.
Cedrick Desjardins (29 shots, 24 saves) took the shootout loss and stopped three of five shooters in the shootout. David Leggio (41 shots, 36 saves) got the win and stopped four of five shooters in the shootout.
Both teams were 1-3 on the power play.
