Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-All money raised through the 2017/18 Slumberland Furniture Fan's Choice Player of the Year campaign will be donated to the victims of the Humboldt Broncos bus tragedy, and another round of fundraising is being planned for Saturday night's game at Young Arena, the Waterloo Black Hawks announced on Wednesday.

Over $4,500 already contributed by Black Hawks fans will be sent to the team from the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League involved in a horrific highway wreck last Friday. To build on that number, $1 from each ticket purchased for the Hawks' matchup against the Des Moines Buccaneers will also be donated. Fans are also invited to show support or help the cause in the following ways on Saturday:

- Arrive at Young Arena early for a special pregame ceremony; your active participation is appreciated

- Wear the Broncos' team colors: green and gold

- Cheer the Hawks as they take the ice wearing commemorative helmet decals

- Proceeds from the chuck-a-puck contest at the second intermission will be added to the donation fund

- Make an additional contribution in one of the "Broncos Buckets" at the rink

The Broncos' players, coaches, and support staff were traveling to a game when they collided with a semi-truck. Fifteen people aboard the bus were killed, and the other 14 were injured. Hockey fans and players across North America and around the world have expressed their condolences after the disaster.

"We all understand what it is like to climb onto a bus, focused on the big game at the end of a long trip. Players and coaches do it without a second thought about coming back home safely. That is why this grief ripples so far and why so many feel compelled to try and help in some way," said Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley.

"It's tragic and sad, and we can only hope that through tragedy we can help the lost souls and that community find some version of triumph. We are seeing the small and tightly-knit world of hockey pull together to honor those lost and help those in Humboldt who will most certainly have a long road ahead."

In addition to the Slumberland funds, during last Saturday's game fans at Young Arena took up a special collection, and a Waterloo Black Hawks 2012 Junior Club World Cup jersey was also auctioned. Each year, fans choose a Black Hawk to be recognized as the Slumberland Furniture Fan's Choice Player of the Year by making monetary contributions corresponding with their favorite player. The 2017/18 honoree is center Jack Drury. After each season, the proceeds are donated to local Cedar Valley non-profit organizations and charitable causes.

"The Black Hawks appreciate Slumberland's long-standing commitment to this program as a way to channel the goodwill of Cedar Valley hockey fans to make a difference," said O'Handley, adding, "In this terrible circumstance, our fans, our organization, and our partners at Slumberland wanted to make this gesture in support of a fellow junior team with which we have so much in common."

Slumberland Furniture is located in Cedar Falls near College Square Mall and Hy-Vee. For tickets to Saturday's regular season finale, call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680 or visit waterlooblackhawks.com.
