Aces Earn Point in 3-2 Shootout Loss in Utah

February 16, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

A brilliant 37 save performance from Alaska Aces goaltender Mark Guggenberger wasn't enough for the Aces who fell 3-2 in a shootout against the Utah Grizzlies on Friday night from the Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah. The extra-session loss snapped Alaska's three-game winning streak, but extended their point streak to eight games. The Aces improved their point total to a league-best 76 points with a 35-11-6 record. The Aces four-game week in Utah continues on Saturday night at 5:05pm AKT. Alaska returns home to host the Las Vegas Wranglers in three straight on Friday, February 22. All Aces games can be heard on NewsTalk 103.7FM and 750AM KFQD. Both teams had quality chances and traded goals in the opening period. Nick Mazzolini opened the scoring on a second chance from the slot at 9:23 of the frame. The goal was Mazzolini's 27th of the year, tying his career high set in 2009-2010 with Alaska. The lead stood for most of the frame, until Utah's Colin Vock raced to the front of the net and found a loose puck that he poked past Mark Guggenberger to even the score 1-1 at the end of the first period. Alaska outshot Utah 13-11 in the period.

The second period was played mostly scoreless, in large part due to the play of Guggenberger. The aces backstop made several highlight-reel saves, including one on Nick Tuzzolino who had an empty net with Guggenberger leaning the wrong way. Guggenberger twisted his body to slam his blocker arm down on the goal line to deny Tuzzolino and keep the score 1-1. Alaska reclaimed the lead late in the period when Chris Clackson scored on a redirection from the slot at 18:07. However, the lead was short-lived as Utah's Mitch Wahl scored on a power play 38 seconds late to tie the game 2-2 heading into the third. Utah outshot Alaska 17-10 in the period.

The Aces outshot the Grizzlies 8-7 in a scoreless third period, and both teams had power plays in overtime, but failed to convert. In the shootout, Utah went two for four and Alaska was stopped on all four chances as the Grizzlies earned the 3-2 win.

Mark Guggenberger (17-6-5) made 37 saves on 39 shots for the win. Adam Morrison (2-6-2) made 33 saves on 35 shots in the loss. The Aces went 0-3 on the power play and the Grizzlies were 1-4. Alaska was outshot by Utah 40-35 in the game.
