ODESSA, TX: The Odessa Roughnecks hosted the Abilene Ruff Riders on Monday, March 30 in an exhibition game from the Ector County Coliseum. Being the final day of training camp, both teams played their first string offense and defense for mostly the first half. Odessa quickly got out to a fast lead with QB Dennis Gile hooking up with WR Torrey Day in the first quarter with a 28-yard touchdown pass. On the ensuing drive, Abilene Ruff Riders QB Quincy Carter lost the handle on a snap and Roughnecks DL Steven Kennedy returned it 12 yards for a touchdown to give Odessa a 14-0 lead.
Odessa capped off the first quarter with a QB Dennis Gile three yard touchdown run, however with the extra point missed the Roughnecks went up 20-0. Abilene got on the board with a safety after second string Roughnecks QB Walter Washington fumbled the ball in the end-zone. RB Carlos Alsup added a 38-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter to cut Odessa\'s lead to 20-9. The Roughnecks would add on a Walter Washington one yard touchdown run to end the first half leading 27-9.
The Ruff Riders came out explosive in the second half when LB Rico Brooks returned a WR Eric Taylor fumble 48 yards for an Abilene touchdown. Backup Ruff Riders QB Perry Patterson had a solid evening going 7-for-15 including a six yard touchdown run to close the gap at 27-22, Odessa.
Ruff Riders RB Bernard Payton\'s two yard touchdown run gave Abilene a 29-27 lead to begin the fourth quarter. The Roughnecks countered with QB Walter Washington hooking up with WR Jimmy Conner for a 19-yard touchdown pass to give Odessa a 33-29 lead. Abilene QB Perry Patterson sneaked in a one yard touchdown run with 2:30 left in the game to give Abilene a late 36-33 lead. Odessa made a last-minute drive in attempt to win the game. However, when several rushing plays inside the five yard line failed the Roughnecks looked to send the game into overtime with a field goal. Abilene secured the win when Roughnecks K Zeke Arevalo missed the game-tying field goal with no time left in the game.
"I felt good about our first string tonight, but overall I would rather have the win." stated Odessa Roughnecks Head Coach, Chris Williams.
Odessa QB Dennis Gile went 3-of-7 for 43 yards passing and one touchdown. WR Torrey Day led all wide outs with three receptions for 64 yards and one touchdown. Abilene QB Quincy Carter went 3-for-12 for 22 yards passing and one interception. RB Carlos Alsup had a big night rushing for 79 yards on six carries and one touchdown. Abilene hosts Odessa on Monday, April 6, 2009 to begin the regular season.
