Aaron Wilkerson Named Southern League Pitcher of the Week
May 22, 2017 - Southern League (SL1)
Biloxi Shuckers News Release
Biloxi Shuckers right-handed pitcher Aaron Wilkerson was named Southern League Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday.
Wilkerson struck out nine over seven innings and took a no-hitter through 6.2 innings on Wednesday during a 4-1 win over the Mississippi Braves at MGM Park. The dominant performance marked the deepest a pitcher has gone into a hitless outing in Shuckers history, surpassing the 6.1 no-hit innings delivered by Jorge Lopez on August 18, 2015, at Jackson.
The 27-year-old from Fort Worth, TX is currently 3-2 with a 3.47 ERA, registering 12 walks and 41 strikeouts over seven starts. Wilkerson was acquired, along with INF Wendell Rijo by the Brewers from Boston on July 7, 2015, for INF Aaron Hill and cash. Wilkerson had his contract purchased by the Red Sox after going undrafted out of Cumberland University (TN) in 2011.
The Shuckers are currently in first place, by a game, over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in the Southern League South Division and starting pitching has been one of the catalysts during the current six-game winning streak. During the past six games, Biloxi starters have a 1.55 ERA.
In 72 all-time games and 62 starts, Wilkerson is 27-15 with a 3.19 ERA. He becomes the first Biloxi Shuckers player to win a weekly award during the 2017 season.
Wilkerson will start tonight's homestand finale against the Chattanooga Lookouts at MGM Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm, with the Beau Rivage Pregame Show starting at 6:15 pm on Cruisin' WGCM AM-1240/FM-100.9 and the Shuckers Radio Network. The game will also be available at biloxishuckers.com, MiLB.TV and TuneIn Radio.
The Shuckers' homestand at MGM Park continues on Monday with great promotions: Military Monday presented by Keesler Federal Credit Union - All active and retired military will be able to purchase $7 Reserved Level tickets with valid ID and receive a free haircut voucher courtesy of SportClips with military ticket purchase at the Shuckers box office. There will also be a special $12 reserved ticket offer for military that includes a hot dog, chips and drink. The Shuckers will wear military-themed jerseys during each Monday home game to salute our servicemen and women!
